This process recording will be a reflection of a session the student social worker shared with a client on 10/21/2015. This client is a Caucasian male veteran, 70, with a terminal cancer. As previously, emphasized in a previous process recording this client is knowledgeable of the services that hospice provides due to the loss of his wife seven years ago and her experience with hospice. The intent of this session was to build rapport and establish trust with this client, in attempt to reduce the sense of loneliness that this client expressed in our initial meeting. In order to help alleviate this issue the student social worker has to gain the client’s trust through conversing with the client about current hobbies. The student worker meet with this client once a week and this week the student social worker was able to make a connection with the client. During this session, the student social worker learned from the first meeting that the client love to work with his hands, he often expressed that he was a “home body,” that rarely leave the house. The client told the student social worker about his hobbies of constructing Nascar for his grandchild; so the student found a car set at the office to construct during our session. At arrival, the student …show more content…
He begin to describe what he had saved to eat for dinner and expressed his excitement. When discussing meal, he informed the student social worker about frozen meals that he eat and be able to consume a home-cooked would be nice. During this session, the student social worker was able to walk through the client garage where he constructed his cars and worked on his paintings. After walking through the garage we sat on the porch and continue to converse and learned about his family medical history and how he added on additional square footage to his home for him and his wife
Goal is she will describe and initiate effective coping strategies using available resources and support systems by time of discharge. First intervention, observe for causes of ineffective coping such as grief, lack of support or poor self concept. The rationale is that situational factors must be identified to gain an understanding of her current situation and to aid with coping effectively. Second intervention is to identify specific stressors. The rationale is that accurate appraisal can facilitate development of appropriate coping strategies.
The Amedisys Hospice service that I work for is special, loving, kind and caring; which we provide comfort and support for our patients, which are facing life- limiting illnesses for each family member and loved ones. The reason I chose the topic to write and tell about my story to tell; is because I am a Hospice aide that I experience each week days. I travel from home, to home, work at facilities, and work in the office some. There are lots of our patients choose to be home for their comfort of their illnesses; and some that aren’t able, or do not have the time for their loved ones; they chooses the facility’s such as the nursing homes, not stating that they do not want to care for them in their home, because they have busy schedules or what
1. Even with our medical advances, the United States ranks 29th because of lack of health care for some individuals but also the lifestyle Americans have. Another reason is that class statuses correspond with our health outcomes. What I meant about this, is that lower and middle class individuals are exposed to more health threats than higher class. This is the connections between healthy bodies and healthy bank accounts and race/ethnicity.
Numerous times, we see people and we think the worst thing first. Luckily for this week’s case study in the book, The Social Work Experience, An Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare, by Mary Ann Suppes and Carolyn Cressy Wells, LaTonya was graciously given the opportunity to remedy her problem instead of the social worker just giving up on her and removing the kids. When Lauren offered LaTonya the help she needed to make decent choices, she empowered her to be the driver of her own success. In my experience we tend to be more successful when we feel as though we fixed a debauched situation instead of being made to fix the situation.
In this assignment, I am going to be focusing on a teenager who has a terminally ill parent and how they would cope within the situation and what key issues you need to focus on in order to make the transition/change a success. The age group I am focusing on would be 16 – 18year old's. This is going to be a very difficult time in the teenager’s life so it is important that the correct support and planning is put in place to help make this experience easier. There are many key issues that you need to focus on when it comes to a young adult dealing with a close bereavement such as a parent, however there are going to be two key issues that I am going to be focusing on and that will be planning and the overall effect it has on the young person. I think this is important because " every year around 0.3% of all families with children under the age of 18years encounter parental cancer, and 3.1% of minors and 8.4% of young adults have a parent that has been diagnosed with cancer" (ncbi.gov, 2012)
This week was a very good presentation. It was very relatable and helped me get a better picture of what applying to coop will be like. It was cool to hear David`s perspective because he is a nursing major. Before going to this lecture I had wished that I had been spring/summer coop. However, David brought up a good point saying that most colleges will be office for summer break looking for interships at that time.
In all my experiences as a nurse, I’ve realized the importance of communication, providing holistic care to an individual and empowering them with the knowledge to manage their health. When an illness strikes a person, it affects not just his body, but also his mind and spirit. The art of communication is invaluable to patient interaction and establishing a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, that facilitate coping mechanisms for patients, moreover it prepared myself as a nurse to meet their individual needs. Furthermore, there is at the moment an insurmountable demand for survivorship care as a result of the advancement in technology and medicine, which made living beyond life expectancy possible for increasingly more people. Living after cancer treatment is not free of complications as there are acute and chronic side effects of treatment that requires constant monitoring and attention, and this information spurred me to shift my focus from palliative to survivorship care.
Everyone’s recovery journey is different, which is why it is important to look at the individual and consider what interventions best suit service users, as a good intervention for someone may be a bad one for another person. Recovery starts when people realize that each individual’s recovery differs and is unique (Bland & Wyder, 2014). It is important for Social Workers to establish a positive relationship with service users and to understand that family participation is really important for recovery, as they are one of the biggest and most important support service users’ need, and acknowledging this will also lead to a more effective and appropriate interventions (Anthony, 1993). It is alothe Social Workers role to support service users’ families as well, as they may need assistance themselves (Bland & Wyder, 2014). The notion that service users are in charge and own their recovery journeys in personal recovery may suggest that families do not have a part or a place in a family member’s recovery and that they are not helpful or useful, which raises questions about the real role of family members in recovery (Bland & Wyder, 2014).
Planning Process I was fully prepared for this facilitation. I choose to present a scenario that shed light on the physically disabled community and highlighted the experiences of my client living at the Gage Transitions to Independent Living Centre. I preformed abundant research on this community and client in order to present a scenario that demonstrated evidence- based knowledge regarding the community, and educate my clinical group about this community. I designed discussion questions that would result in an ongoing conversation regarding the concepts of community nursing and the lived experiences of my client and those in the physically disabled community.
Mock Therapy During this mock therapy session, I played the role of the therapist and Lysa played the role of my client who was seeking therapy services. Lysa is a middle aged married woman who reports that she has three grown children and two grandchildren. Lysa reports that she works full time but she reports that her schedule makes her go in early and get off early. Lysa reported that she was feeling depressed as there were many things that have changed in her life recently and she felt that she was unable to live up to her own expectations of herself, others expectations of her, and she reported that she was overall feeling lonely.
This assignment also covers the importance of hope for patients and the role hope plays in terminally ill patients. I will also discuss ways in which health professionals can foster hope in terminally ill patients. I was on my placement on an oncology ward. It was my second week on
NASW suggests that an appreciation and respect for the importance of human relationships compels social workers to engage their clients as partners in the helping process. Since the beginning of cognitive-behavioral therapy the goal of the therapeutic relationship has been a joint effort between the social worker and the client, one that emphasizes the importance of this joint relationship and the importance of the active role of the client in that process. This joint effort is defined by the client’s ability to make choices regarding the treatment process and self-determination. Maintaining focus on clients’ strengths and client empowerment. Strength and empowerment, are cornerstones of social work practice.
Reflection is a vital part of social work education or practice. Reflection allows for serious thought and consideration regarding past experiences. Those thoughts and considerations can then be used to better yourself in multiple different ways. Over the past semester, I have reflected on my personal social identities and socialization experiences regarding gay men who reside in America. I have also reflected on different aspects of diversity through participation in weekly discussion posts.
Over the semester I have learned many new aspects of social work that have helped deepen my understanding of what social work is really about. This course has taught me things that will help me become a better person and will also help me with my future working with children. Self reflection is a key skill to have when working in social work. We need to understand how we are, and our social location, influence everything we do with social work. My beliefs and values would be beneficial for being a social worker because I have a caring no judgment, personality that allows me to be a neutral and to listen to people.
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
