Clinical Reflection Paper

This was where I first developed my multitasking skills to oversee and coordinate four clinical research studies. My strong communication and interpersonal skills enabled me to meet crucial deadlines and work efficiently with physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical sponsors, and study monitors. I strive not only to be a great employee and team player but also to serve and positively impact my community, especially the medically underserved. For more than five years, I have volunteered over 1,000 hours, and most recently, I serve through the Lestonnac Free Clinic and Access OC organization as a Spanish interpreter. As a bilingual Spanish-speaking nurse, I hope to help my community by breaking down the language barrier between patients and the healthcare team in order to ensure the accurate continuity of care.

During the year 1982, Dr. Kathleen Holland decided to open her own pediatrics clinic in Kerrville, Texas. She would need help to run her clinic and so she hired licensed vocational nurse, Genene Anne Jones. Jones had been employed by a hospital prior to working in Holland’s clinic. She was a nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio. Her peers began to notice that more of the child patients were dying only during her shift.

Ambulatory care settings are often the first places where patients discover why patient’s chose Bellin. Bellin has illuminated my professional career, advocating for patients and families within my current ambulatory setting position, as evidence in finding a personal passion in supporting a pilot refill team as the lead registered nurse coordinator was on maternity leave. This previous experience has given me the insight to further challenge myself. Professional development has expanded not only myself in my career professionally, as well as educationally in working toward my masters within nursing, but through involvement as now a committee member of the advancement team. In completing three advancement program cycles as a participant, signifies how increased awareness can be expanded further into ambulatory settings as a number of extravagant opportunities for professional career advancements.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP): It was formed in 2013 by the fusion of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (founded in1985) and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (founded in 1995). The purpose of this association is to advocate for the issues and performance of the nurse practitioners. The Indiana State Board of Nursing (2011) defines advanced practice nursing as a registered nurse who has attained advanced knowledge and skills through an organized program of study. The three categories of study include nurse practitioner, certified nurse mid-wife, or clinical nurse specialist. National certification is not required for nurse practitioners completing an accredited graduate program. However, if the continuing education is part of a certificate program then a national certification is required. Although certification is not required in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children nurse practitioners are required to certify within one year of employment.

Description: In week 7 we had visited Wesburn Manor, the Long-term Care (Clinical Placement) setting. It was our first time there, therefore as a group, we oriented the place. At this time, we went to each nursing station on each floor and introduced ourselves from the organization we were from and how we will be providing patient care to the clients in this setting. We were educated by our clinical instructor on the different access codes in the building, the policies and guidelines, our assigned floor and the appointed personal support worker. Our role of professionalism as a nursing student was represented as we came prepared and greeted each healthcare and staff member.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Mrs. Cooke’s fifth grade class during my clinical experiences. Mrs. Cooke has a great rapport with her students and has very little difficult actively engaging students in learning. One of the “takeaways” from my visit references the students’ and teachers’ commitment to the principles of “The Leader in Me”. From a school-wide perspective, East Elementary School does not practice the traditional positive behavior interventions. Instead, the administration has adopted the ideals and principles behind “The Leader in Me”.

Upon arriving to the unit this morning, I quickly realized today was going to be a chaotic day with the current patient census, and all of the new admissions. I was able to assist the night charge nurse with today’s assignments, while she helped with the code, and the day began. I informed my team that today was going to be a long day, and encouraged them to use each other and myself for help. I recommended they taking a few minutes to coordinate their work after receiving report. At 0745, when Jane informs me that the patient in 408 has fallen, I am quick to get into the room and do an assessment again.

An event that was significant to me throughout clinical placement was when I forgot to introduce myself to a visually impaired client. The event that I encountered occurred on my second day of clinical placement at Fieldstone Commons. This event highlights the need for effective communication when treating a patient that suffers with visual impairment. I assisted in morning care for multiple clients, one client stood out to me in particular.

This clinical experience has really helped me to sharpen my communication skills and realize just how important it is to understand mental health. We are told multiple times in class that mental health issues can be seen on any floor and that is the truth. I’ve seen patients in my older adult clinical on the pulmonary floor suffer from issues that range from anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression. Being able to understand how to approach people that suffer from these types of illnesses, allows us, the nurses, to give the patient the best care that we can. It helps to build a trusting relationship and get to know them on a personal level.

During these past weeks at the Archbold ER, I had the opportunity to put into practice many of the content learned in class. This included but was not limited to the proper placement of a Foley catheter using sterile techniques, insertion of an NG tube, and assessment of patients. Even though I attempted to complete some of my initial goals for this internship, I noticed that I couldn’t complete a few of them due to lack of time and lack of experience in the field. Therefore, some of my goals that I’ll need to address during the following three weeks include improve my assessment skills, have better communication with my patients, and improve my questioning to get a better understanding of the cause that brought them in.
