Article 5 Communication problems in professional sports: the case of Greece The purpose of this research was to explore the communication barriers among coaches and players in professional sports, define the basic communication principles, and suggest methods of improving the communication process. The results of this research showed that the most important communication problems between coaches and players in professional sports are: the external factors, the limited time, the language, the ability of perception and the negative attitudes. Coaches considered the external factors as the most import, especially when their teams are playing away. The factor of the negative attitude was considered as a main problem only by one coach. The first key communication on a basketball team is between the coach and the players. According to Jill Prudden, a former high school basketball coach and the author of Coaching Girls ' Basketball Successfully, communication allows the coach to explain a play to the players and what role each player will have in it. Besides discussing plays, communication allows each party to give feedback to one another. Prudden expresses how both positive praise and constructive criticism helps both the coach and players to make improvement in communicating with one another. She encourage her players to reply by saying “two points” for any praise she give them and “rebound” for every criticism.
So, I opened the door to listening to them and their suggestions by using the cooperative-style. This style involved sharing decisions with the team (page 31). I gave them direction, provided instruction and only used discipline when only necessary plus I allowed the athletes to make decisions and assume responsibility (page 31). I accepted guidance from my staff and parents, too. The team’s culture changed for the better and became our social architecture that fueled the team psyche.
This is used to evaluate athletes' perception of coaches' behaviors, their leadership style or how athletes perceive their behaviors in 5 subscales.
