Commentary On The Book Night By Elie Wiesel

Eliezer or “Elie” Wisel was a Romanian-born American Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor. Elie was also the narrator in the novel Night. A major point discussed by Elie was how we as the future generation should remember the victims of the Holocaust. Wisel points out that “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” In other words, if we don’t learn from history it is bound to repeat itself.

This section did not have hope in it unlike the past section. However, I was able to get more of a perspective of how activities ran in Auschwitz and all the other camps intermingled within it. I found that the section had only a few parts that were disturbing, but for the most part, I find that the author of the book is increasingly likeable. Although he has guilt for some of his orders, it is a significant contrast from the guards in charge whom do not care about any prisoner. What I found to be very reprimandable is when Nyiszli gave the female prisoners medicine to take back to their shacks.

The book covers the horrific experiences of the author and his family as they are subjected to unimaginable suffering including starvation, torture, and madness. Elie Wiesel narrates the account himself with brutal honesty, taking his readers through the darkest moments of his life with vivid descriptions.

In the first chapter elie wanted to be really big on religion with him and his religion teacher and during this time mooshie the teacher was taken to the camps and he faked his death and what he saw terrorized him for life. What Mooshie saw was the Germans and people that worked for hitler were using baby jews as target practice.and whenever mooshie came back he tried to tell the other jews of what he had saw and they thought that he was lying so they didnt do anything about what he had said so then later that night. Hitler Came with the germans and they put them on an cattle cart.

The book I read was NIght by Elie Wiesel. This book was published in 1958. Elie Wiesel was a well known author. He recently passed away July 2nd, 2016. He wrote many books: Night, Day, Dawn, and The Oath.

Wiesel and his father manage to pass the selection, and are subsequently transferred to Buna, Gleiwitz, and finally Buchenwald. Due to the trauma Elie experiences at the hands of the Nazis, he undergoes a profound transformation, losing faith, empathy, and humanity.

Night is technically not categorized under the traditional literary movements.

To find a man who has not experienced suffering is impossible; to have man without hardship is equally unfeasible. Such trials are a part of life and assert that one is alive by shaping one’s character. As a young boy, Elie and his fellow neighbors of Sighet, Romania were sent to Auschwitz, a macabre concentration camp with the sole motive of torturing and killing Jews like himself.
