The film “Dear White People” written and produced by Justin Simien is based on a campus culture war at an ivy league University. The University mainly consisting of white students causes mayhem when a Halloween party occurs and actions take things too far. Justin focused on four black students, their encounters and interactions with their peers. One character in particular brings me to my topic of race. Samantha White, a biracial student who is set on fixing things on campus between white and black students. Instead, she causes a situation between the administration and students criticizing white people and racial transgressions at the school. Little Rock Nine began in 1957, when a group of nine African American students wanted to enroll in an all white High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This may have caused a crisis but they felt they had the right to get an education they deserved and segregation shouldn't stop them. As Racial Segregation still occurred at the time, African American students were not offered the same opportunities as white people. They didn’t have the same education system nor proper education environment fit to properly teach. Classrooms were small in size compared to the white schools, textbooks were used and the cafeteria’s barely had any room to fit everyone. The group of students of Little Rock Nine were surrounded by mobs of angry white people and were harassed and terrorized for coming to the school. Melba Patillo was one of the Little Rock Nine members and she suffered the most physical abuse. She was stabbed, had lit dynamites thrown at her, called ugly, threatened with death and such. There was one incident in particular where a student threw acid in her face in hopes of blinding her. It was so extreme that one of the guards that Eisenhower had appointed for each of the students for protection to wash her face with water quickly because if not, she would have been blinded for life. In a predominantly black high school, Freddie Watts is the principal and Jimmy Brothers is the assistant principal. They are both African American administrators. During a heated conversation between the two administrators and Ann Griffin, a white tenured teacher. Griffin stated that she “hated all black folks.” After the conversation there was word that spread among their colleagues which are both black and white.
Board of Education signified the first time that the Supreme Court was on the African American side. This court case was a direct challenge to Plessy v. Ferguson, which stated that separate but equal facilities were equal. The book Warriors Don’t Cry is set directly during this period. In 1957, Governor Orval Faubus blocked the integration of nine students from Little Rocks Central High. President Eisenhower eventually became involved for a few reasons; one was because Governor Faubus was making an obvious resistance to federal authority.
Due to the decades of tradition and practice of integration, they did not believe that it should happen. The parents of the children would protest in front of Central High chanting “Two, four, six, eight. We ain't gonna integrate”(147). The parents believed that since they were white they had the upper hand when it came to civil rights. The issue of integration had been a problem in Arkansas for years but it had finally become real when Judge Davies ruled that it was okay for the Little Rock Nine to attend Central High.

Segregation was when one racial group set themselves apart from another racial group. Segregation took many different forms: restrooms, schools, waiting rooms, theaters, taverns, buses, and other public places. There are many stories and articles of the injustices caused by segregation; perhaps the most angering, however, is what was underwent by the Little Rock Nine when they attended school at Little Rock Senior High School. Along with not being let into the school until nineteen days into the school year and having to get the president with the U.S Army’s 101st Airborne Division involved, the Little Rock Nine all experienced “routine harassment” as they later described it. Most of the students attending the school at the time were extremely opposed to the idea of integrating with the black students and wanted to continue the schooling with segregation.

In 1957, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas’s decision, segregation in public education violated the Fourteen Amendment, but Central High School refused to desegregate their school. Even though the media displayed false information about the 1957 integration of Little Rock Central High School it changed peoples views on segregation. In A Mighty Long Way Little Rock, Arkansas nine African American students wanted to go to a well educated high school but they do not understand why so many people are angered that they are just getting a better education. During the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957, the media illuminated certain events and painted an inaccurate or incomplete picture of other events. The media illuminates many important events that show how racist white people are treating black people and showing people in the North who are against segregation and support integration.
First off, the governor closed all the schools in Little Rock, so no one could attend. Not only were all the students greatly affected, but the families of the Little Rock Nine had the more major punishments. Many of them were quickly fired from their jobs to reduce more conflicts with business. Once the schools were finally opened back up, each of the nine students were separated throughout the different schools, which caused even more awareness that schools needed to become desegregated. The impact that the Little Rock Nine had on today is the fact schools are all officially desegregated.
For the next few months, the African American students attended school under armed supervision. Even so, they faced physical and verbal abuse from their white peers’’(Source B).This demonstrates how people got together and protested along with the African American students on how the segregationists were being racist and treating them like they were nonexistent. This also shows how the segregationists were ignoring the fact that others were disagreeing with them, but they were mainly focused on being inconsiderate and treating the ‘’Little Rock Nine’’ poorly because they were Negros. The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.
Moreover, demonstrate consequences are taken to oppress racial and ethnic minorities to keep them in a subservient position. Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate. The label of “White” became a necessity for Sarah Jane to achieve in society. To attain it she needed to move to a new city, change her name and deny her mother.

In the film 12 Years a Slave the editor, Joe Walker, makes use of a couple of techniques and styles that adds to the film in its own way. Long shots – Joe kept the long shots as long as he thought was necessary to add to the subject matter and the feeling he wanted to bind with the story. At the end of the film there’s this extremely long shot where Solomon is practically staring at the camera for about a minute and a half. The timing of that shot is so perfect because it’s not too short so you don’t have enough time to think about what just happened or too much time to overthink the situation. Closer to the end of the shot he lets the sound fade slowly and rapidly gives you a wakeup call when the next shot starts off where Solomon and the rest of the slaves are busy working in the field.
