The Department of Health and Human Services (also known as HHS or DHHS) is the United States government's principal for protecting the health of all Americans providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. According to the health and human services website it states “The department’s mission is to enhance and protect the health and wellbeing of all Americans by providing for effective health and human services and fostering advances in medicine, public health, and social services.” In the introduction of this same website it also states “HHS works to provide better health care, promote scientific research, and protect the nation’s health and social services systems. It is responsible for a wide range of programs and services, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Furthermore, the HHS is responsible for enforcing federal laws and regulations. HHS has a vital part of keeping citizens healthy and protecting them from harm. It is a multifaceted system of organizations at the states and federal labels that are responsible for ensuring access to quality health care, advancing public health and providing human services.
