Introduction The ability to help others that are in need has been around for many years and had evolved into a system of many different organizations that address multiple needs today. I will address how they have evolved throughout this paper and show the changes that have been made from the churches being the primary provider to how nonprofits have grown to be more involved in the overall services being provided.
Chapter three of Navigating Human Service and Organizations helps us to understand the roles in human services organizations. Because nonprofit organizations employ the highest number of social workers, this chapter focuses on nonprofit organizations (Furman & Gibelman, 2013). The chapter starts out by discussing what the role of the board of directors does in a human service organization. Human service organizations in the nonprofit sector are accountable for formulating and approving policies for the organizations (Furman & Gibelman, 2013). It is the board members job to act on behalf of their community and the organization; therefore, they are trusted members to carry out the mission statement of the organization (Furman & Gibelman, 2013).

I believe working in the human service field can be challenging at times. I know in my line of work as a probation officer I will encounter so many challenges and I might not be able to fix every problem. A human service professional can be defined as someone with a passion for human needs. The challenge I will encounter as a HSP would be finding free treatment for clients with substance abuse problems. Everyday clients on DWI probation are being assist for substance abuse treatment, but don’t have the proper funds to pay for the treatment.

My understanding of Human Services is to help people who need additional help and guidence to move forward with their life. Sometimes people need help with external problems such as the loss of a job, the need for food or housing or for help getting out of a dangerous situation or mental and physical health crisis. The Human Services practitioner is a professional who acts as an agent to assist and or empower individulas, groups, families and communities to help them function more effectivly in all areas of life and improve living condition. Human Service professional will always advocate for their clients and will never give up on them and make sure to strive for the clients well being as long as the client want to change.
I knew going into the human service field that a lot was going to be hands on. For my first experience to go to The Department of Human Services of Denver, completely opened my eyes on how a process can work to help lives in our community. The department is located down town off of Federal by the Denver Bronco stadium, there I met a dear friend Nichole Young who was so generous to help me and guide me through the entire department. I arrived to the department on October 25, 2015 at 4:00pm. The first feeling I had when I walked in was I felt at first I was in a court house or dmv.
There is one particular goal that is shared amongst all human service agencies and that is to help those that are in need. Human services organizations are different from general organizations in the business world in many ways. It is stated by Lewis and Packard (2012) that human service organizations work together towards reaching a common goal. The professionals of human services work together in many ways and also in different settings to help assist clients with improving their lives. In general, businesses tend to aim more towards targeting aspects of the general population.
