The election of 1896 was one of the most exciting in history. It brought modern techniques that are still in use today. The election occurred when the United States was still experiencing effects from the Panic of 1893; the divide between the rich and poor was larger than ever. Gold versus silver became a focal point for candidates. Although there were many candidates in the election, only two had gained votes from the Electoral College: William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley.

This is where the Compromise of 1877 came in. The Compromise of 1877 was the deal that finally settled the disputed presidential election of 1876. The Compromise allowed the electoral commission to happen and awarded Hayes to be president over Tilden since he won the electoral votes. In order to do so Hayes would have to end Reconstruction on the South and remove the remaining federal troops out of the Southern states. Those states were South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.

South Democrats made a deal with Hayes to take away the military troops and Republicans from the south from then they would vote for Hayes this then lead to Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were Laws made to enforce segregation of blacks from whites.

It resulted with the United States pulling the last of the troops from the south, ending the Reconstruction Era and giving the south power over their land. Both Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden had great political talent, but of course, they saw being president as something else in their own eye. With Hayes coming from the North and Tilden coming from the South, their goals were going to be pretty different. The Civil War ended not too many years before hand, so the election was going to be very rough.

The amount of influence a state has on the election depends on how many districts it has, and a district is determined by population. The more people in a state the more powerful that state is on election day. This is because one candidate can win the popular vote by a landslide but if the opposing candidate wins key overall state votes he or she would win. In class, it was discussed that Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota together, though their combined population is less than that of Oklahoma, each of those states has three electoral votes, whereas Oklahoma just has seven votes. Going by electoral votes, a candidate would have a better chance at winning the election if they won over Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota versus Oklahoma.
