In his book, Suicide, Emile Durkheim explores the social reasons that would someone to commit suicide. The basis of his argument laid in his ideas of social integration and social regulation. Social regulation is the many facets in which a person can be involved with society, such as political groups, religious groups, and domestic groups. Social regulation in comparison are the social and moral rules that a society decides what is right and what is wrong. Durkheim believes that people need to find a balance within social integration and social regulation to live a healthy lifestyle. Being on either ends of the spectrum for integration or regulation can lead someone to commit suicide. What Durkheim did not do in Suicide was compare rates of suicide between racial groups. African-Americans have a consistently lower suicide rate compared to Caucasians in the United States. However, African-American males from the ages of 20 to 29 have suicide rates much closer to those of their Caucasian counterparts. Using Durkheim’s arguments in Suicide as reference, it can be argued that African-Americans as a racial group have lower suicide rates than their Caucasian counterparts because African-Americans have more sources of social integration and regulation than Caucasians. Also, African-American males between the ages of 20 and 29 have suicide rates that more closely resemble their Caucasian counterparts that specific age group …show more content…

On everyday sociology blog, I came across an article which interested me the most and it was “Thirteen Sociological Things about 13 Reasons Why”, by Jonathan Wynn. The article discusses the Netflix series show which was based on suicide. I have watched the show and the show doesn’t only focus on suicide there are many other factors which are connected to why the suicide took place. To start off, some of the factors included bullying, drugs, sexuality, rape, mental illness, and how adults/parents play a role in a teen’s life. These are all connected with one another.
Culture refers to the social heritage of a people- those learned patterns for thinking, feeling, and acting that are transmitted from one generation to the next, including the embodiment of these patterns in material items. Culture provides the meanings that enable human beings to interpret their experiences and guide their actions (Hughes and Kroehler, 2013). The African culture have played a role in our society for many years. America is known for its diversity and is called the melting pot.
I have always been fascinated on different variables that affect young minorities’ emotional, mental, and physical behaviors. I came across this scholarly Journal of Black Psychology in my Psychology of the African American Experience. This field is very important to me because it speak about the community that I connect with and mention that there are different psychological theories and methods that should be used to based on minorities and not a universal
We can’t take anymore cuts. We just can’t” (Morales). Arialdi Miniño, a statistician, told Huffington Post how Native American suicides are looked at, saying, “We always focus on non-Hispanic white males in particular, because they do represent the vast bulk of the problem. But, it seems to me that the American Indians are particularly vulnerable here as a group. I don’t know if that is always represented and taken into account” (“Native American Youth..”).
While the suicide rate for aboriginal females is only 35 per 100,000 compared to only 5 per 100,000 for non-Aboriginal females. (“Health Canada,” 2015) This shows that the suicide rate

There comes a point in a person’s life when they are unable to escape from problems and nor do they have the strengths to fight them. In situations like these people tend to take things upon themselves and make a decision whether they want to live or die. And when it becomes intolerable they commit suicide without being aware of what grieve they will leave their loved ones in. Suicide has become a very serious and popular problem, according to the sociologist Emile Durkheim suicide rates differ from society to society, and is most common among men because they tend to have higher expectations of their roles in the society whereas women are able to build identity through their relationships with others. Suicide within the Aboriginal groups are most commonly a result of past and ongoing misunderstandings.
When individual’s common consciousness is weakened, people feel less connected with their society. Durkheim claimed why there is increased amount of suicides during this period of
“ Many people think genetic features are not only just similar faces between parents and children, but also their talents. This concept caused children has to excel parents’ achievement, especially academic success in Asian American families. Moreover, when some students under pressure, the worst situation is they might have suicidal thoughts. In Jeff Yang’s article who is CNN reporter, he mentions that four students committed suicide in the US and three of them were Asian American. (Yang)
This project has been using both books and websites as a source, as well as primary sources, in form of statistics from OECD, and secondary sources such as academic books. This project would have liked to use more primary sources, but because of the language and geographic barrier, it was not possible to make interviews with families to hikikomoris, other Japanese persons to find out what they think of the social control in Japan or read suicide notes, which would have helped with defining the suicides. The website OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), has been used to get statistics. The other websites used in this project have been for minor pieces of information.

Suicide is the third-leading cause of death in young adults aged 15-24, after accidental injury and homicide (Cimini, et. al, 2014). For this reason, involving the community as a whole in developing a plan to recognize, intervene, act to create awareness and reduce the suicide incidence in this age group is detrimental. The plan is to raise awareness, engage stakeholders and decrease suicide rates of adolescent suicide among Native Americans 15 to 24 years of age.
Moreover, it is also higher among soldiers than civilians and in times of peace than in times of war. Further, i higher the education level, the more likely it was that an individual would commit suicide. However, Durkheim established that there is more correlation between an individual's religion and suicide rate than an individual's education
As a result, teen suicide is the third leading cause for all deaths among teens aged 15-19. Teens suicide attempts and completions have steadily been on the rise since 2000. Surveys have found that 25% of high school and 10% of college students have seriously considered suicide sometime in their life. Therefore, any teen who mentions anything about suicide should be taken seriously.” (Reed) Frala 2
