Harriet Tubman And The Underground Railroad

Imagine being a slave at such a young age and having to learn many things so early in life but later help you when you are older well that is what happened to Harriet Tubman, she wouldn’t stop until she would be able to save any slave she saw. The biography, “Harriet Tubman: Conductor of the Underground Railroad” by Ann Petry is about a slave who learned many skills as a child that would teach her to defend herself. She learned these many skills from her father when she was 6 years old. These skills would later come in handy for her when she is older. She would use these skills later to save many slaves from their owners and escape from slavery for good.

Harriet Tubman was an African American/Negro. She was also the main Conductor of the Underground Railroad. She was born in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, USA. She was originally born with the name Araminta Ross. She was also known by her nicknames: Minty and Moses.

Imagine walking through the dark woods, through narrow paths and treacherous creeks on a cold December night without shoes or warm clothes. Throughout ten years, that’s what Harriet Tubman did. Harriet Tubman would help hundreds of slaves escape using the well-developed underground railroad. The underground railroad was a series of safehouses that strung along the route to Canada and not it’s actually underground or a railroad. Harriet Tubman was an American hero because she, worked as a nurse during the civil war, helped other enslaved American slaves escape and she inspired her cargo and led them to freedom.

Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. The fact that she knew the land of the south very well was extremely helpful for the runaway slaves when escaping through the Underground Railroad (Maschi). According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.

The Civil War was a horrid event that greatly affected our modern day lives. From 1861 to 1865 the Union and the Confederates fought to protect what they thought was right. Throughout the war many people turned up and encouraged change in areas they believed were lacking thought such as, abolition, women 's rights, and suffrage. One of this people was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, which means that she was against slavery.

The Underground Railroad wasn’t an actual railroad and it wasn’t underground. It was a network of people, homes, and businesses that helped slaves escape from the American South to the free states in the north and Canada. Harriet Tubman was never caught on her 19 trips freeing

On one occasion, Harriet was unable to make it to Garrett’s station. Thomas was able to hatch a plan in order for Tubman and her fugitives to reach his store safely. “Garrett hired bricklayers and had them leave the city crossing a bridge in two wagons, seemingly off for a day’s work on the farm… Once Garrett’s henchmen were safely outside the city, they rendezvoused with Tubman and carefully hid all the fugitives in the bottom of the wagons, under blankets and tools.” Garrett was willing to do anything possible in order to help Tubman and the fugitives.

In this essay I will examine the Underground Railroad over a period of turbulence that spanned ten years and focus on some of the key figures involved and the significance of their roles. Harriet Tubman and Harriet Breecher Stowe were both central to the movement during this time and although they focused their attention on vastly different areas of the Railroad both women had a profound and positive impact. Harriet Beecher Stowe was a white woman from Cincinnati Ohio. When the Fugitive Slave Act 1850 came into effect it ironically galvanised a new era in the Underground Railroad where Stowe, like many other whites was spurred into action. In the time where slavery became a divided issue with the status of legality in various parts of the country, the underground railroad found its beginnings through collective organized efforts from abolitionists and allies alike to help enslaved African americans to escape to territories and states where they could be free from slavery. It was a loosely-developed system that also included series of routes led by “conductors” such as Harriet Tubman, for escaping slaves, or “passengers”.

Her name given at birth was Araminta "Minty" Ross. Tubman 's mother was assigned to "the big house" and had very little time for her family; unfortunately, as a child Tubman was responsible for taking care of her younger brother and baby, as was typical in large families. When she was five or six years old, Brodess hired her out as a nursemaid to a woman named "Miss Susan".

She has helped the United States in many ways. After that she also purchased land to build a home in 1896 for needy and sick blacks. Harriet was one of the people who helped establish the Underground Railroad. She was also known as “Moses.”

She is extremely qualified due to her intensive work dealing with this time period of American History. She studied sociology and American History at Harvard and then received her Ph.D. at Princeton University.
