Imagine being a slave at such a young age and having to learn many things so early in life but later help you when you are older well that is what happened to Harriet Tubman, she wouldn’t stop until she would be able to save any slave she saw. The biography, “Harriet Tubman: Conductor of the Underground Railroad” by Ann Petry is about a slave who learned many skills as a child that would teach her to defend herself. She learned these many skills from her father when she was 6 years old. These skills would later come in handy for her when she is older. She would use these skills later to save many slaves from their owners and escape from slavery for good.

Harriet Tubman was a conductor that would go down in history even though she didn’t conduct a real running railroad. Anne Petry states, “With rare courage she led over 300 negroes up from slavery to freedom” (Petry 242). The book talks about all her struggles, accomplishments, and chattel slavery. The novel should be read by other schools, because of all the history there is about the chattel enslavement era and Harriet Tubman’s life.

One leader can change how a region, or group of people think, but many leaders can make an entire country question itself. A group called the abolitionist did just this. The abolitionist held many leaders such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and many more. All of these people held specific qualities that set them apart as ideal leaders and spokespeople. One of these leaders was Harriet Tubman, born as a slave she had great initiative and courage as she not only escaped slavery but returned to plantations to sneak off more and more slaves.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century enslaved people of African descent in the United States. The Underground Railroad was not “underground” and it wasn’t actually a “railroad.” The reason it was called “underground” was because of how secretive it had to be and it was called a “railroad” because it was an evolving form of transportation.

When Tubman started getting older at the age, she started enduring some sewer pain. She endured brain surgery at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital to ease the pains and vivacious she knowledgeable smoothly. Tubman was ultimately known as the timeout home named in her nobility. Bounded by friends and family members. In 1913, Harriet Tubman died of pneumonia.

Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. The fact that she knew the land of the south very well was extremely helpful for the runaway slaves when escaping through the Underground Railroad (Maschi). According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.

The Civil War was a horrid event that greatly affected our modern day lives. From 1861 to 1865 the Union and the Confederates fought to protect what they thought was right. Throughout the war many people turned up and encouraged change in areas they believed were lacking thought such as, abolition, women 's rights, and suffrage. One of this people was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, which means that she was against slavery.

Abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman recounted her experience with freedom from slavery. Harriet Tubman is one of the many leaders of civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is the violation of an unjust law and the acceptance of the consequences given to the protestor (Erika). In America, civil disobedience has played a noteworthy role in many social reforms that many take for granted today. Civil disobedience is not followed by everyone.

In this essay I will examine the Underground Railroad over a period of turbulence that spanned ten years and focus on some of the key figures involved and the significance of their roles. Harriet Tubman and Harriet Breecher Stowe were both central to the movement during this time and although they focused their attention on vastly different areas of the Railroad both women had a profound and positive impact. Harriet Tubman was an extremely successful abolitionist that helped many enslaved African- Americans escape. Not only did Tubman’s actions prove that she was an outstanding women, but the method she used to carry these slaves to freedom proved her brilliant. A quote written by Gilbert Amelio says, “Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can’t get a message across clearly to motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn’t even matter.”
