The Struggle of High School Athletes
Athletes put in a lot of time and effort into their sports and for high school athletes it’s especially hard to juggle school, sports, and personal life. And for some people, it doesn’t even seem like the work pays off. Imagine being an athlete in high school and putting in all of the blood, sweat, and tears to try to make it to the next level with a scholarship or to even go pro, but it all gets washed down the drain because of one reason or another. High school athletes aren’t rewarded for their hard work and their performance in any way, so they should be paid based on how well they perform since they put so much time and effort into their sports. High school athletes are put at risk of injury which would

This is double the rate of American adults. If someone doesn’t perform as well as they feel they should have they can become stressed and depressed and think that they aren’t good enough. This can cause their personality to change and affect not only themselves but the people around them too. A person can become incredibly stressed and overwhelmed from trying to balance and keep track of sports, school, and their social life. High school athletes deserve some type of reward and recognition for going through all of these issues …show more content…
A recent study has shown that only 1.3% of high school athletes go on to get a scholarship to play a sport that would help them pay for college and prepare for their future. High school athletes should be getting paid some amount of money so they don’t think that all of their hard work for their sports has gone to waste after their sports career ends if they don’t end up getting a scholarship from a college. Equally important, another study shows that only 0.00075% of all high school athletes go on to play a sport professionally. That’s how low the chances are for someone to eventually make money just from playing sports at a high level. Also, high school athletes usually don’t have time for a job since they already have to balance their time between school, sports, and personal life. It would be nearly impossible to add a job into that list. Since high school athletes don’t have time for a job they should be getting paid for playing sports so that they have a way of paying for college if they don’t get a
Why College Athletes should not get Paid Wouldn't you want your college to be a fair place? College athletes are not paid because fans could lose interest if the players had been expert athletes. Paying all college athletes involves a number of tough enterprises and money, so for universities to be an awesome and fair region for all students colleges generally choose to now not to pay college athletes. College athletes need to know not to be paid because these athletes chose to be athletes, and also no one has sufficient money to pay everyone, so there could now not be any equality, however, some argue that athletes spend all their time and don’t get what they deserve returned. Different programs within the college could be erased if college athletes receive a commission consistent with maryville.edu “athletes will diminish the spirit of amateurism” this means that if students get a possibility to receive a commission at college they may never need to pick some other class which can have an effect on their future.
“Lest you think I exaggerate, look up the case of the two athletes at the University of Iowa who started a T-shirt screening business and were threatened with ineligibility by the N.C.A.A. because their website mentioned that they met because they were both — brace yourself — swimmers” (Rosenberg, 2017). Paying collegiate athletes would also help develop athletes better if they do stay longer instead of rushing to go pro and then failing to be something because the they were not for that type of exposure. Injury is another reason why they should get paid. No matter what sport you play, you’re always putting your life on the line when you play that sport. “Paying players could guarantee them a degree of financial security, and prevent some from leaving prematurely” (Labaton,
Division one College athletes should be paid at least minimum wage, while playing their sport and attending school. Pursuing this further, most division one athletes have been working at their craft since about grade school or even before. While putting in countless hours to perfect their craft they also have to attend school. If you add up the time spent on practice, training and games, it’s estimated that college athletes often "work" the equivalent of full-time hours for the universities they play for. There are over a million other athletes all with the same goal
“Broke College Athlete Anything Helps”(Nigel Hayes). As a high school athlete, one day you might play a college sport. Just like many other athletes, you might want to get paid. College athletes are not getting paid and many of them are struggling to pay for college. College athletes should be paid because they make the colleges millions of dollars while lots of college athletes struggle financially to get through college which forces them to turn to illegal payments.
College Athletes: Should They Get Paid? The controversial debate on whether or not collegiate athletes should be able to profit from their name, image, and likeness has been going on for as long as the brain can think. Each year, year-round, college athletics generate tens of thousands of dollars for their respective institutions, only for athletes to see none of that money. It is believed by many that the scholarships athletes receive is enough to compensate, along with the presented argument that allowing college athletes to make money makes college athletics political and takes away from integrity of the business. To oppose, not all sports give athletic scholarships, and even when they do, it still isn’t enough to compensate for an athletes’
They deserve the reward for representing and helping their college to victory and also inspiring other to come to the same college. In addition Many highscholl graduates did not go to college for the same reason, of the expenses that there is. IT is very unfortunate for some others but we think that should change. There is also a big problem with Debts and expenses, playing a big role in college but with the help of the college, athletes are able to live off college sports like a
College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing, they have to pay for living, and they cannot get a job. College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing. Some articles have said that athletes spend up to 40 hours a week in the gym, or practicing. Since the athletes are constantly working out they don't have time to make money. Without any money they are unable to buy extra food.
A 2019 study done by the National College Players Association found 86% of college athletes live in poverty due to their demanding practices and schedules. So many college athletes live without needs because their demanding sports take up all of their time. While practicing, playing, and training the athletes have to risk their bodies with the possibility of obtaining such a substantial injury that can alter their life. College athletes should be paid because while often receiving a lower education due to their demanding schedules they are risking their bodies and future while often receiving a lower education and many are living below the poverty line even though they are valued at over $1 million. To start off, college athletes are risking
College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.
If the “college athletes are paid they would be more motivated to stay in school, instead of joining professional teams”(Compensation For College Athletes). If these have 20 year old kids have a decent salary why would they want to risk it for a chance at nothing. These athletes can’t even make money from ads because “College athletes are forbidden from doing advertisements”(College Athletes Should Be Paid). If the school isn’t going to pay them, why does the school care if a company does, if anything wouldn’t just bring more revenue to the school? Lastly, if these athletes are paid the amount of under the table autographs and jersey sales would be greatly decreased.
According to Marc Edelman, “An average division one college athlete puts in about 43.3 hours per week, bouncing from the field/court, weight room, and film session, that is more about 3.3 hours more that the average full-time job and they receive a salary. “(2014, para 3) And yet all they can receive, is a pat on the back and a “good job” compliment. While these athletes are bringing in massive amounts of money into their schools on a daily basis, the athletes only get to see that the money goes to their coaches, facilities, and school, which is not terrible but still could be better for the amount of money they bring in.
In my personal opinion, college athletes should be paid due to seeing first-hand the immense amount of dedication the players put into their sport. I believe that by placing their sport above all else, making it a sole factor of their focus, athletes treat their participation in their sport as a full time job. Being required to practice year around taking up most, if not all spare time that they aren’t in class or studying, makes maintaining an outside job or way to make money seems nearly impossible. According to Mark Edelman from Forbes.com, the typical Division I college athlete devotes around 43.3 hours per week to his or her sport and maintaining his or her scholarship. Not only are they spending over 40 hours per week towards these sports related demands, but they are also required to spend around 50 hours per week towards their academics.
Mike says”Students all over the world work hard at the sport that true love and don’t get a lot in return for it”. While college athletes may not exactly be employees, they are more than just students. Consider the life of a student-athlete, though. The average Division I football player dedicates over 43hours per week to his sport, meaning that he spends more than a typical American work-week training and playing football, in addition to his class work. Their work, which generates exorbitant amounts of money year in and year out, deserves Compensation.
The reasons being, most professional athletes don’t play longer than 3-5 years during their career. That’s a very long retirement and what if you get hurt, it will be very hard to live 50 years in retirement on a 3-year career. Next, it’s not fair to others who aren’t born athletes and have to concentrate hard on their grades to get into a good college. If athletes don’t work hard on their grades, they are just wasting talent. Lastly, if you play sports all throughout your time in school without concentrating on your grades and it turns out you aren’t good enough to become a paid professional athlete, you are left with nothing to help you succeed in the real world.
When student-athletes received full scholarships, they should be privileged and thankful since the cost of higher education is very expensive. Student-athletes need to understand the circumstances and take of advantage of getting their degree from a well renowned university since the percentages are very slim to none on having a professional career in sports. The purpose of a student-athlete is to be a student first and then an athlete second. The main focus should be on earning a degree, and not worrying about when is the next game on the schedule. Many people are stating that college athletes should get paid, but how about the general student body that has little to nothing and working a job earning minimal pay.
