I believe in the 19th century that the American history was vindictive. Back then they denied the rights to black folk and they also attempt to use education to destroy the Native American culture. Also, in the 19th century, a major event in American history was the quest for democracy and equality. They were lynching and beating African American during Reconstruction and segregation period in the south. By reading this I understand how we have it easy than back then.

While we would like to believe that Reconstruction was the 2nd American Revolution, the facts, however do not completely just do not support this idea entirely. The “Reconstruction” era which was very important, was the time in which the United States sought to rebuild itself after the civil war. The government was hoping for a total over-hall of the social, political and economic structures of the Southern region but this change needed to extend beyond just the south into the entire country and the Federal Government. What happened however, was a series of “reconstruction” efforts, none of which fully addressed the real issues facing the newly freed blacks and poor whites. The chapters of our textbook, America: A Narrative History, written by George Brown Tindall and David Emory Shi, takes us on a historical yet comparative journey of the road to war and what caused the American Revolution, an insight into the war itself, and a perception to what life was like in America after the war was over. The essays of the book, America Compared: American History in International Perspective, collected by Carl J. Guarneri gives us a global context and a comparison between the North and South Americas in the dividing issues of labor, slavery, taxes, politics, economy, liberty, and equality. Part One These chapters in our textbook Tindall describes; the road to the American Revolution, the road to the surrendering of the British, and the road to the American colonists receiving their independence and developing the government which the people of the United States will be governed by. There are many documents in America’s history that have defined key moments in the past and shaped the future. Out of these three documents, Abraham Lincoln’s first inaugural address has the most historical significance because it was spoken when the country’s identity was divided, the south had succeeded from the union, and Lincoln’s election into office was a cause of the Civil War, the bloodiest war in America’s history. “The Men Who Built America DVD” begins immediately after the American Civil War. The United States was in a rebuilding stage and the future of the country seemed uncertain. During the next 35 years, there would be a group of men who would change the country and the world forever. These men would have power and wealth never before seen in the world and would direct the United States into the 20th century. The first man is Cornelius Vanderbilt who was a successful business man his entire life.

There is a vast amount of events throughout America’s history in which Americans have been cruel to other people, oftentimes wrongdoing of our own U.S. citizens. From the beginning of the United States’ history of forcing Native Americans from their homeland, to current day events such as the Charlottesville riots where Confederate flags were raised and claiming that the Confederate flag has good meaning and is not racist. Coates expresses how America uses good intentions as a way to make up for all of the harsh events that have occurred. Before reading this, I was aware of Americans making excuses for their actions, but Coates helped me to realize that even in events such as slavery, the United States has found ways to justify their actions,

The North and the South differed from each other in various different ways including the geography, the economy, their society, and the transportation methods. Their economies developed in different ways depending on how they did things. One was more of a farmland, while the other was more of ports and rivers and streams. The way the North and the South differed helped them develop and grow into the economy that they were.

American history is the study of major events and people that shaped the country many live in today. One of the major people that shaped America today was George Washington. He was the first and only general to lead in the revolutionary war. One of the major events in American history was Arnolds march to fort Ticonderoga. This gave the American army the supply of canons it needed to fight the British.

The Five Nations of the Iroquois were the native people located in the eastern woodlands of North America which had a matrilineal civilization based on horticulture, which was mainly the women’s’ job, and hunting, which was a job for men. 2. The Renaissance brought new merchants from around the world to Europe, who along with goods brought new ideas about republics which could replace monarchies and the idea of civic humanism, the idea that everyone has rights.

There are two volumes of this book which the author called a narrative history of America. It comprises the information about the years from 1932 to 1972. And, unlike other typical (and boring) history books where the information is usually jumbled in decades, each of the 37 chapters of this book covers only one year.
