How Did Thomas Jefferson Explore The West?

The Louisiana Purchase was a “land deal” made between France and the U.S. in December of 1803, where France sold America 828,000 miles of land along the west side of the Mississippi River for 15 million dollars (approximately 4 cents per acre). People regard it as Thomas Jefferson’s greatest achievement because of how drastically it changed the United States. The purchase greatly expanded America and brought many other benefits along with it. Although it was definitely a major benefit to the United States, even Jefferson had his doubts about the purchase. But despite many doubts, the U.S. made the decision to ratify the purchase, and because of that decision, America has changed for the better.

I 'm not so familiar with Pike, but I can tell you all you want to know about Lewis and Clark. When Napoleon needed money, he sold Jefferson the Louisiana Purchase, which he had acquired when he conquered Spain (the Spanish were not amused). To find out what he 'd just purchased, Jefferson sent Merriweather Lewis and William Clark (the brother of George Rogers Clark) to explore it. It covered an area from Louisiana northward to Missouri and across the biggest part of the Great Plains and Northwest. The team which went with them included such diverse people as Sacajawea, a Shosone Indian and her baby (nicknamed "Pompey" by Lewis), Lewis 's slave, French trappers, woodsmen, and other interpreters.

Lewis and Clark were known for an incredible journey that changed US history. The journey increased the size of the US dramatically. From May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, a dangerous but yet history changing exploration occurred. Through many dangerous situations and hardships, the expedition of Lewis and Clark turned out a success.

In the beginning, Thomas Jefferson had just bought the Louisiana Territory. He needed someone to explore and map all of the land. This task, he gave to his friend Meriwether Lewis. Lewis then asked his friend, William Clark to be his companion. The two men set off on the expedition in 1804.

Lewis ,Clark and 32 other men and a slave named York went on this journey. There was one woman named Sacagawea who also joined them on this trip. Lewis and Clark investigated a huge plot of land. It covered from the Mississippi river to the Rocky Mountains east , and traveled from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. They explored from the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.

They had about thirty-four people in their exploration when they started but when they ended the exploration they had about twenty-seven people. Lewis and Clark travelled through ten states and went back through all ten states. When the Spanish heard about Lewis and Clark and their exploration they tried to arrest them because the Spanish were worried about Lewis and Clark taking the Spanish’s land. Clark was a devoted family man and a valued friend.

Would you have the courage to leave your home friends and family to go off on an important mission? You would not know where you are going or who will be there, but in the case of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the reward was worth the risk. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were part of the Corps of Discovery which comprised a select group of US Army volunteers. This expedition was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson soon after the Louisiana Purchase. They explored and mapped what is now the Western part of the United States.

Joe Meek discovered Yellowstone Plateau. He was a mountain man. Mountain men were really into getting beaver, to make hats, as they were a popular fashion. There were four times as many french mountain men than american. There was a yearly meet up and they spent most of their money there.

Although he never really accomplished what he what trying to do, Henry Hudson was still a very driven and persistent explorer. He was a leader to many other explorers, and he also helped inspire interest of America in Europe. In Hudson’s lifetime, he set out on four voyages. For three of these journeys he was partnered with England, and for the other, with the Netherlands. Henry Hudson is a great example of an explorer who kept trying even with adversity.

President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery to have the Lewis and Clark expedition find a waterway that could connect the United States for transportation because he had aspirations to expand to the Pacific and Northwest making the expedition important to his agenda for the United States. (The Corp of Discovery, 2016). Another reason for the important expedition was to create a relationship with the American Indians, and the American fur trade, while learning the North American topography and geography of the land which was also important to the exploration (Corps of Discover, 2016). Meriwether Lewis was the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that was commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory. He came back from this trip with new knowledge of the Louisiana Territory proving that the Louisiana Purchase benefitted the whole country. This made him a hero and further strengthened his friendship with Jefferson. Jefferson later appointed Lewis as the governor of the whole Louisiana Territory. The governorship was significant not only because of the title, but because his rival, James Wilkinson, was turned down for the job because of Lewis.

In the early beginning of building America mountain men discovered many different regions of the United States but one mountain man in particular made discoveries and saw the country in ways that no other mountain man had before. John Colter the mountain man contributed to building America by traveling across the United States with Lewis and Clark, learning the wilderness, and discover Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and leading the Missouri Fur Company to help develop the culture of America. In his earlier years of exploration, John Colter accompanied Lewis and Clark on two journeys across the continent (Wise, Legands of America). On his expeditions with Lewis and Clark, Colter gained very valuable knowledge of the land that he had covered, and

Lewis was also believed to have had depression or an anxiety disorder. Meriwether Lewis was an explorer, soldier, politician and public administrator. He was best known for his role as the leader of the Corps of Discovery, but he was also President Thomas Jefferson's private secretary. Sacagawea’s exploration with Lewis and Clark in The Corps of Discover Expedition made an impact on the United States and its decisions on exploration and expansion. Sacagawea was a Shoshone interpreter who greatly contributed to the Lewis and Clark Expedition .She knew some of the geography they passed through, and interpreted when the expedition came across Shoshone-speaking American Indians. Sacagawea identified roots, plants, and berries that were medicinal or edible along the journey, helping Lewis and Clark identify things about this new land. Sacagawea is a significant part of the Corps of Discover Expedition because she contributed to helping build relationships between American Indians and White Americans. She also helped the discovery of new geography, plant and animal species, which in turn made new things
