Human nature is frequently referred to be the combination of innate characteristics that exemplify what it means to be human. Some may argue that it is inherently bad, whole others argue that it is inherently good. The novel Lord of The Flies written by William Golding explores the deep and dark side of human nature by implementing a story about boys who crash on an island and how they survive. Golding's portrayal of human nature is certainly pessimistic and is also a reminder of the potential dangers of unchecked human behavior. Golding’s viewpoints suggest that without the constraints of civilization, humans can become savage and violent, driven by their desires for power, control, and self-preservation which is agreeable. Golding believes that human nature is ultimately evil as he portrays the dreadful side of humanity in Lord of The Flies. As we get to chapter 5, all the boys on the island are arguing about whether or not there is a beast on the island. The Nazi regiment used many forms of propaganda to spread anti-Semitic messages to lead to the genocide of the Jewish people, “The Nazi persecution of the Jews began with hateful words, escalated to discrimination and dehumanization, and culminated in genocide.” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). This quote clarifies the horrific acts of violence the Nazi regime committed against the Jews by using their power over others to manipulate and dehumanize Jews. In brief, the holocaust exhibits how some people can change themselves after gaining power and the horrible acts they can commit while also leading others to do the same.
