Joe Moore THEY CALLED THEMSELVES THE KKK INTRODUCTION “They Called Themselves the KKK,” was written by Susan Cambell Bartoletti in 2010. In the story, she writes about the birth of the American Terrorist Group, the KKK. In the story, she introduces the reader to people who lived after the Civil War, the time known as the Reconstruction. She gathered the information or the book from a variety of sources: interviews with Klu Klux Klansmen and their victims, congressional testimony, interviews, and historical journals, diaries, and newspapers. Bartoletti did not censor the interviews or newspaper articles and photographs; therefore, some people find the book to be racially offensive.

The KKK was flourishing because they got a new founder, then they got a new leader and that is when they took off. They believe in White and christian supremacy. They thought that everyone had to be christian, and they believed that blacks did not deserve to do the same thing as the whites to any degree. What they did is hung and beat people who were their targets. Also they broke windows with bricks and burned the houses of the targets.

The KKK was a white nationalized group that included former veterans, which created the first branch of the group. The Klansmen founded in 1865, in Pulaski, Tennessee, is now known as the birthplace of the KKK. This group dedicated themselves to a campaign of violence to Republican leaders and voters. The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1865 by six veterans of the Confederate Army. Over a period of three hundred years of slavery in America White slave owners built a sophisticated structure to sustain their brutally corrupt and immoral system. They founded “The Klan” to protect the interests of the white popularity. Evolving from the Slave Patrol to the Ku Klux Klan. The first generation was known for its brutal and immoral acts against immigrants and former slaves.

Many people began to resent black Americans gaining power and success. Therefore, they began racist groups and passed laws to make sure black Americans were subordinate. The Ku Klux Klan was created by Confederate Army veterans who wanted to restore white supremacy. They used violence and threats to torture and kill many black Americans. The Black Codes were also put into place to limit the rights of black Americans.

Although the war ended, it led to several long-term effects that have now impacted our community, geographically and economically that are still intact today. Income taxes were first created in the summer of 1861 to levy the war efforts. The congress was left to come up with a way to raise any money that remained in debt. They levied a 1% tax on wages on the first $1500 and 2% on any additional income.

Throughout this document there is a reoccurring theme of self-victimization, justice, and racial pride. Hiram Evans establishes the theme of self-victimization and racial pride when he illustrates what he believes is being taken from the “Nordic” Americans. He focuses on the negative aspects that he feels is harming the American people and causing them modify their government and morals. Evans constantly promotes the American race as the seniority of all races.

Wood’s argument for the Ku Klux Klan depicts the Klan as a sort of superhero, acting as a vigilante, its primary function being to free the Confederate states from the humiliation of African American influence and the Reconstructive legislation placed upon them. The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.

The Ku Klux clan thought that if they employed violence, it would push back Reconstruction and its enfranchisement of African Americans. They focused their time on targeting African Americans more so than any other group, though they also targeted republicans.

As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
