In the book the Kids of Appetite, the author uses literary devices such as flashbacks, order of events, and repetition to convey feelings in the reader. The author uses flashbacks to create tension and suspense about the characters. For example, the book takes place with Victor and Madeline in separate interrogation rooms at the Hackensack police station clearly trying stall the officers. Then the scene changes and the story flashes back to seven days prior, before anything has happened.
