The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has defined six key values for social work practice: service, social justice, the importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of the person, and competence. Social justice is an essential core value within Mission Australia in guiding its programs and campaigns. This is exemplified by Mission Australia addressing and educating the community on social injustice and disadvantage, pushing for systemic change to enhance the lives of marginalised and at-risk individuals. By offering services and programmes that aim to address the underlying causes of social problems, like education on homelessness, Mission Australia exemplifies the fundamental concept of social justice and why it should be addressed not only by charity organisations but the general public. For instance, their housing and homelessness programmes work to give those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so safe and affordable accommodation in which donations of the community are accepted.

Social workers have several responsibilities. They have to provide service, justice, and dignity to a client. They have to possess integrity, competence, and patience. Social workers need to possess knowledge of human rights, and how to perform scientific inquiry. Social workers occasionally have cases in which problems ensue and a solution is not found within a certain time frame.

The National Association of Social Work created a code of ethics that guides social workers on what core values that they should uphold during work (NASW, 2008). When discussing social welfare policy’s, the NASW code of ethics can be applied to immigration due to social justice being one the core values. Social justice consists of fighting for rights for individuals who lack the access to resources. The immigrants that are discussed in the articles, have a lack of social justice due to the deportation. This is where social workers need to step in adjust the privileges and distributions within society.

This is why the ethical code of discrimination is important, social workers should be free of all forms of it in a work setting. By working toward ending discrimination and racism, the ethical code of social and political action is being applied. Respect for cultural and social diversity is being encouraged and promoted. It is the job of social workers to challenge these policies on a continuous basis. Every possible action should be taken to improve policy whenever applicable. Responsibilities of social workers to the broader society are covered in section six. 6.04 Social and Political Action are most relevant with this case. According to Sue (2005), “A culturally competent social worker is one who is actively in the process of becoming aware of his or hers assumptions about human behavior, values, biases, preconceived notions, and personal limitations.” (Sue, 2005) I work with many individuals with varied race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, political belief, religion and mental or physical disability that are different from my personal identity and I do not find it difficult for me to educate myself and seek understanding the nature of their social diversity and oppression. In fact, I find it intriguing learning about their backgrounds. However, on occasions their values may conflict with my values and when this occurs it is vital for me to remind myself that my ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life and enhance their well-being.

Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).

Despite social workers best efforts to keep their feelings in check and to respect differences, being confronted with situations in which their values and morals conflict with those of their clients is a common scenario. For example, one may feel uncomfortable dealing with clients because of his or her sexual orientation. This issue arises because of the practitioner’s religious affiliation which results in the practitioner being unable to accept homosexuality. Another example, a pregnant client, ask her pro-life social worker for help obtaining an abortion. As the act of abortion conflicts with the social workers’ values, they may feel torn.

Social workers are there to help meet the basic needs of human, also with the need of helping encourage, mentoring, and empower human struggles in society and poverty. The code is designed for many reasons. It identifies core values in which a social worker mission is based, the code summarize broad ethnic principle such as; challenge injustices, respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person, behave in a trustworthy manner, and help people in need and to address social problems. The code is generally designed to help people with relevant needs to there every day life. These codes help apply better and relationship with the worker to client.
