According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), more than one-third or roughly 36.5% of U.S. adults are obese. In 2015 there were more than three quarters of Veterans, who received care in different VA facilities, considered to be overweight or obese (Rogers, 2013). The way the Miami VA addresses overweight and obese Veterans is by providing programs such as Management of Overweight / Obese Veterans Everywhere (MOVE). MOVE is an outpatient weight management health promotion program that focuses on health and wellness through healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior change. The program is offered to Veterans who are overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 30. Veterans also qualify if they have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome as well as any BMI with a waist circumference of > 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women (Rogers, 2013). MOVE is a 16-week weight management program which involves an interdisciplinary team including members from psychology, physical therapy, endocrinology and a …show more content…
Each week builds on education materials from prior weeks. The group is lead through decisional balance exercises. For instance, asking the Veterans to give positive reasons to lose weight and writing it down on the board with a separate column listing the hard and unpleasant things about losing weight. The dietitian notes the process and how the group had easier time generating first list; yet despite clear benefits, weight management is a struggle. The effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) relies on allowing the patients to discover their own reasons and determination to change a behavior. Thus, allowing the Veterans to weight decisions is a great strategy used to promote healthy change. Solutions and ideas that are generated by the group are much more powerful than those that are
For the “Let’s Do This” program focused on reducing and controlling childhood obesity and adult onset of type II diabetes in Point Mar, an instructional strategy – lecture, quiz, games, and brain storming will be utilized. This is based on the Social Cognitive Theory applied to health behavior, which is an evidenced based approach (DiClemente, Salazar, & Crosby, 2013). The reason for utilizing this strategy is that this approach is based on behavioral adaptations that will improve health within the community. In addition, the five key constructs of the social cognitive theory are; knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, outcome expectations, goal formation, and socio-structural factors (DiClemente, Salazar, & Crosby, 2013). Another reason is that this strategy is a multi-level intervention approach that is aimed at the individual and his immediate social environment (DiClemente, Salazar, & Crosby, 2013), which plays a huge role in the incidence of Childhood Obesity in Vista County, which “Let’s Do This” is striving
Interviews will be held with the veterans in the program so the external evaluator can receive personal feedback. They will be asked questions about their mental and emotional state post-rehabilitation, how long it took them to find work, the job they have acquired and how they have felt since moving into their new homes. The utmost truth can be given to the stakeholders, through interviewing, about the programs effectiveness, before the next calendar year. The evaluation at best will be a hybrid evaluation within the Outcome Stage of the Comprehensive Evaluation Typology. The evaluation approach for a hybrid model is real world evaluation, through performance assessment and development facilitation.

Therefore, veterans have to suffer in the end. I somewhat agree with Peck statement because if a veteran has any type of permanent injury, then he or she cannot really function back into normal society. The veterans might need more help and guidance to really fit back into society. Some people might blame for the increase in the veterans homeless population because the lack of attention towards the increasing problem. The government officials did a poor job to track the number of veterans in the street.
Introduction Motivational interviewing is a collaborative, person-centred form of communication which focuses on the language of change. ‘It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion’ (Miller et al., 2013, p.29). The technique of motivational interviewing was developed by two psychologists, Bill Miller and Steve Rollnick. Motivational interviewing is therapeutic to patients as it is based on a partnership, rather than a nurse-patient relationship (Heckman et al., 2010). There are four processes of motivational interviewing; engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
My mock motivational interview was done by myself as the therapist and Ph.D. student. Rachel, as my mock client. In the mock interview, Rachel was newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was having trouble with changing her eating habits. She is an active young adult who enjoys having drinks and going out to eat with friends and family. She try’s to eat healthily but is not ready to just stop eating her favorite foods cold turkey.
I strongly value my health and believe that health is our greatest form of wealth. When one lives a healthy lifestyle, it means more opportunities to explore the world, build families, achieving anything the heart desires and conquering personal goals. The behavior change philosophy fits my personal philosophy of health education the most because it involves goal setting, behavioral contracts and self-monitoring to help foster the modification of an unhealthy habit. The behavior change philosophy is very important because change is a process, not an event. Self-efficacy and motivation are key factors in successful behavior changes.
They argue that the government should not be spending significant amounts of money to veterans or people that just came out of war. While they acknowledge that some veterans are so psychologically damaged by their experiences in battle that they cannot function properly in society and require disability payments, other veterans, they say, may become unnecessarily dependent on veterans' services. Although, all these are valid arguments that they can make, in the long run by helping veterans out it will greatly impact not only veterans individually but the society in a positive

The money that would be saved through the lessening of obesity could be put towards other aspects of government to maintain high physical fitness standards for all citizens. Alongside this, obesity produces many health hazards such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
