“...December 7th, 1941-a date which live in infamy”(Roosevelt 1). President Franklin D. Roosevelt speaks about the Empire of Japan and how they attacked the United States of America. This is very important to the United States because they are being invaded so suddenly and deliberately. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s main purpose in writing the “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” is to establish war and fight against Japan. In “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation”, the president uses ethos the appeal to credibility, logos the appeal to logic, and repetition in order to advance a point and achieve a purpose in his speech.

Part of this ricochet was FDR’s Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation. This speech was played to millions due to radios recently being readily available to the public and because of this, FDR’s speech would have a substantial impact on the events following Pearl Harbor. As a result of the crisis, FDR’s speech was made. Even though the speech contains some fallacies it remains effective in its use of rhetorical appeals, logos, pathos, and ethos to influence the audience.

In the essay "We're Safer Post 9/11" written by Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano, and James Clapper, a very intelligent, well descriptive work is published based on the days after the tragic 9/11 event. We all know that 9/11 was a very sad day and it destroyed the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pa. The writers gave great examples as to how the United States has increased the safety of our country. We have took down most of the people and groups affiliated with the 9/11 attack and that is a great achievement accomplished. The attempt of proving how we have increased our safety was well expressed.

Also, Roosevelt said “The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu” (American Rhetoric). Roosevelt said this because Japan took thousands of sailor’s lives hoping, his audience would take this attack personally.

In response to the brutality, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States, delivers his “Pearl Harbor Speech” claiming that Japan is the enemy of America. He strengthens his argument by harnessing the uses of diction, anaphora, and pathos. In conclusion from both events of Pearl Harbor and 9/11, we have learned that we still stood strong as a nation. We never gave up and never will. Both presidents during each event gave a very respectable speech. We can see from each speech that there were different vibes. Roosevelt believed in our arm forces would get the job done.

On the mournful day of December 8th, 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to the nation informing them about the tragic attack by the empire of Japan on Pearl Harbor. The attacked occurred on the previous day before his speech, and he knew no matter what he had to say to the nation, it wouldn’t help. By waiting a day, he hoped it would have a greater impact on the people as a whole. Compared to other very popular speeches throughout history, this one is fairly short, but gets directly to the point. By doing this, he believed it would make everyone more engaged while also having more of a dramatic effect.

The bombing of the Pearl Harbor is an event no one can forget and neither is Franklin Roosevelt’s speech. It was this that brought American into World War Two and changed history.
