“People ask why I am in a sorority & I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, & obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving without expecting a return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve your problems. But I have made good friends & found confidence there to help me take life one step at a
Bad education performance can be the cause of members of a Fraternity and Sorority dealing with insecurity, self-image, and psychological issues. The process of joining the Greek life is challenging, students get specifically recruited and enter what it’s called a rush. Rush is known to be popular ritual among the organizations where members get to know each other more. Fraternities and sororities will host and promote parties and many would go through initiation process to become a member. According to “Here’s
A weakness of selecting certain sorority members based on the author’s discretion holds bias because of its convenient sampling. Robbins’ selection of particular participants may not fully represent the population, even though Robbins indicated that one of the sorority members would be a positive representative of the national organization. In addition, the participants are only from one institution and a small sample size. Robbins’s lack of details of her methodology of how she obtained their experiences and not using real names or locations to conceal her sources' identities lacks credibility. In addition, this challenges higher education professionals can do to solve these issues of superficial values and dangerous practices, especially since all sorority houses tend to have different reputations on different
I wanted join Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. sense my sophomore year of college. I want to have the brotherhood to help me grow intellectually, socially and intellectually. All these things I want and support I have seen in various moment through my experience with the brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in your illustrious organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I am currently a senior majoring in Criminal Justice, minoring in African American Studies with aspirations of becoming a Social Justice Attorney. Born in the inner city of New York and being raised in the suburbs of Atlanta, I am not your typical Southern Belle or City girl. I like to think of myself as being a fine mix of the two. At a young age my mother groomed me into what she believed a well-rounded lady should be.
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
“Sisters” to most people would mean girls who share the same parents, but with sorority girls, “sisters” are the members in your sorority who share a bond between each and every one of them. I am a member of Delta Zeta sorority, I joined at the University of West Georgia but still feel the bond between me and my sorority sisters. Sisterhood means the world to the girls in sororities and it is an extraordinary thing to behold despite the fact that it may mean something else entirely to everyone else. In Sorority Life: The True Meaning of Sisterhood, they state, “Sisterhood is more than the letters which we wear on/around campus – it’s something much greater, something sacred & treasured,” and that couldn’t be any truer.
So what does it mean to be a member Zeta Phi Beta Inc.? When I think about the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority I see resilient, professional, independent, and a diverse group of
I have always had a passion for Greek life. My brother and Dad were both a part of a fraternity and I want to continue the trend. Georgia Southern offers 25 different fraternities. I also want to become more involved with things on campus and joining a fraternity will do just
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
“I joined because my older sister was already a member of Delta Gamma and I saw how much she enjoyed being a part of a sorority. I liked the idea of living in the house and getting to meet tons of new women with the same morals and values as myself” (S. Henry, personal communications, August 4, 2015). Although some of the chapters find themselves in a competition to be the best sorority, it usually makes each sorority want to do bigger and better things. According to Henry, the best part about Greek life is the fact that everyone supports everyone and everyone is there to help others. Many of the members overpay their due by completing more services hours than necessary.
When I initially signed my bid for Chi Omega, I had no idea the impact that it would have on my life. As a junior, I was much older than a majority of the girls in my pledge class, and even the sorority. Thankfully it didn’t make a difference in our connections and I felt that I had finally found my home. I knew that I had made a decision that would make a huge effect on my life in so many different ways. The first improvement Chi Omega has made in my life is academic.
Explain your interest in joining Phi Delta Epsilon-MA Alpha Chapter. * I want to join Phi Delta Epsilon because it would provide me the chance to build lifelong connections and gain networking opportunities. Most importantly, I see myself forming a bond with other members, studying and sharing memories of what it’s like to be a premedical student at UMass Boston. The ability to connect, strive for success and learning from others with the same goal to attend medical school is what I’m truly seeking as a hopeful applicant of PhiDE. Joining the fraternity is the beginning phase of my strenuous road to become a successful physician.
It is a fact that fraternities and sororities are a major part of student life at the University. Students are preoccupied with pledging. This is not approved of by most members of the faculty, however, they feel helpless about attacking them. Perceiving that the Greek societies are attractive to the students but at the same time encouraging anti-intellectualism, it is not an issue that can be addressed easily.
Alpha Phi has taught me to uplift my sisters and help them grow, and I believe this
First, Burkman stresses the fact that pledges engage in hazing rituals because they feel that they have to belong. The author explains this idea by saying that as humans we need to feel the sensation of “fight-or-flight” (Burkman). But the fact that we live so privileged we rarely feel it. The idea of sororities and fraternities is to shrink our world to a small group, that way we feel a part of something more than ourselves. These invented groups are filled with secrets, rituals, symbols, chants, and cheers, all built to say that “This is my village, and where I belong” (Burkman).
