Introduction
Miriam-Webster (n.d.) defines success as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame”. To me success is not money, possessions, or the illusion of happiness. How the world defines success is much different than how I define success. Rick Warren, in his book “Purpose Driven Life” (2002, p.19) says “You could reach all your personal goals, becoming a raving success by the world’s standard, and still miss the purposes for which God created you.” Fulfilling God’s purpose for my life, to me, is success.
Personal Statement: Philosophy of Success
My philosophy of success is living a meaningful life, full of joy, not simply happy. Joy, to me, is best defined as “The inner attitude of rejoicing in one’s salvation regardless of outward

I get things done. I have also learned that it is okay to ask for help. I do not generally write things down, and as a result, I forget, or let something get in the way. By writing down goals, action steps, and barrier busters I will be more likely to follow through.
Measurement of Success While completing my Bachelor’s degree my grade point average will be important to me, however, it will not be the ultimate ruler with which I measure my success. My success will be measured in the increased effectiveness with clients I gain, my desire for lifelong learning, and most of all my faithfulness in trusting God. I will know I have succeeded in my listed goals when I am healthier, as defined by my physician, I experience increased joy, my clients are more successful, and I trust God with every area of my life.
Teamwork and Tribes My support system is crucial to me. I have a great support system in family, friends, and co-workers. They agree with my definition of success and support my endeavors to live out my passion. Without the support of others I would not be able to live the life God intends for me to
The book Outliers, written by Malcolm Gladwell, never defines the word "success," a concept explored in its entirety throughout the book. Rather, the term Outlier is defined as “something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body,” and “a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of the sample,” which relates to the popular view of success. Conversely, Gladwell’s theory of success is that the outliers could not have achieved success without both the opportunity to achieve success, and the hard work to make use of the opportunity. Following this principle, I have related my own successes to this theory. The first opportunity for success came from my parents wealth
Think of success like watching a tree grow the branches split into different paths one can take each split is another opportunity to prosper and grow beautiful leaves like trophies. An uncommon belief is that the process of becoming successful is like a tree branch, if one starts off strong, more paths appear growing from the sturdy branch, and achieving goals lead to leaves growing to show wealth. “It is those who are successful, in other words, who are most likely to be given the kinds of special opportunities that lead to further success,” (Gladwell 30). Author of nonfiction book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell, agrees with this uncommon belief, in his book he argues that success does not come from intelligence or passion
According to the articles, “What Leads to Success in Life,” by Jocelyn K. Glei, and “The Moral Bucket List,” by David Brooks, a person must possess certain qualities in order to achieve ‘success’ in his life. While Glei emphasizes that self-control, passion, and perseverance are the necessary qualities needed to accomplish a person’s dreams, Brook illustrates that the keys to a successful life are the virtues that inspire the inner characters of a person. The article that resembled my outlook on success was “The Moral Bucket List” because the lessons that Brooks expounds on follow closely with the teachings of my religion as well as how they produce life-changing decisions. As a Mormon, or Latter-day Saint (LDS), I’ve been taught that the virtues that Christ possessed and exhibited during his lifetime are the same virtues that a person should live by and the attributes listed in the ‘bucket list’ are similar in nature, albeit if not the
If you were to ask a few people how they measured success, most of the answers would vary. Some may state that is based on your monetary value or that it is measured by your happiness. Yet, these answers can be categorized by a broad definition: success is achieving the goal you set your mind to. Malcolm Gladwell, in his book Outliers, challenges the societal view of how success is ultimately obtained. The author states “...if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires” to emphasize the importance of persistence and work ethic when looking for success (Gladwell 151).
Gladwell’s Argument in Outliers Success is a concept that is constantly altered and has a different meaning from person to person. The stereotypical definition of success would be someone who has a high-paying job or is in the upper-class. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers: The Story of Success, approaches the concept of success in a different and unique way. Gladwell discusses how opportunities, cultural legacy, and hard work all coincide with each other to produce real success. He uses mostly logic and multiple unrelated anecdotes to support and provide evidence for his statements.
What Is Success What is success? According to the dictionary, it is “the fact that you have achieved something that you want and have been trying to do or get; the fact of becoming rich or famous or of getting a social position, etc”. Success seems a simple word, yet this plain word renders a large amount of individuals pay relentless endeavors. Remembering the CCTV host Wang Zhi said that success is relative, and everyone has its own standard of success. For many people, success means money, statue, reputation, and so on.
Success is a noun which comes from the latin root word, successes, meaning, "an advance, succession, happy outcome.” Success can therefore be defined as an accomplishment of a desired end (dictionary.com). Everyone has his or her own interpretation or definition of what they think success is, but in this interpretation, there is always a common goal at the end. That goal is to have a happy and good outcome. Willy Lowman’s definition of success was skewed, and for this, he did not achieve a happy and good outcome like he may have planned.
