In the book The Achievement Habit by Bernard Roth chapter two, “Reasons Are Bullshit,” Roth explains why reasons are bullshit in a very meaningful way. The reason this chapter is very meaningful is because Roth persuades the reader that reasons are just excuses prettied up by using the rhetorical triangle which relates directly to ethos, pathos, and logos. Roth helps the readers to never give excuses, because excuses are just something to hide because you are not willing to try harder. Roth says, “Many reasons are simply excuses to hide the fact that we are not willing to give something a high enough priority in our lives” (42). Roth gives a lot of examples throughout the chapter, also he provides a lot of evidence to show the readers you do not have to make excuses to succeed in life. Adrienne Rivera, who is a professional writer says, “It is important for professional writing to use ethos because it established the writer’s credibility” (Rivera 1). With that being said, Roth uses ethos effectively, he is aspiring to the readers and provides them with an understanding of the importance. The logic, reasoning or excuses people give is that there is not enough time which is not true because there is twenty four hours in a day. Roth says, “When something is a priority in your life, you have to be willing to walk away from anything that’s standing in its way” (47). This quote explains that if there is something important that needs to be done one have to do it. Not only that but if it is something that is in ones way of completing something that needs to be done, they have to walk away from it and handle their business.
