In Kurzweil’s The Age of Spiritual Machines, one of his main arguments is that one day, in the near future, artificial intelligence will exceed the intelligence of humans. He predicts this largely on the idea of the intelligence of evolution. It took evolution millions of years to make the human being that we are today and it only took humans a few thousand years to create technology. Since you are considered smarted if you are able to do something faster, humans are smarter then our creator, evolution. Kurzweil predicts the same thing to happen with technology becoming smarter then its creator which would be us. He develops his argument through the use of pathos and karios. It makes the problem appear more important to the reader if it is actually something that is happening as they are reading it. He states, “And so, too, will the intelligence that we are creating come to exceed the intelligence of its creator. That is not the case today. But… it will take place very soon… even in terms of human history-and within the lifetimes of most readers of this book” (47). This quote from the book directly addresses the reader and tells them that this will happen in your lifetime. All of a sudden something that seemed so distant and impossible becomes reality. Kurzweil also uses the Law of Accelerating Returns to describe to the reader how the evolution of intelligence works. The Law of Accelerating Returns states that “As order exponentially increases, time exponentially speeds up (that is, the time between salient events grows shorter as time passes” (30). This law states that technology will get to a point where it’s intelligence is increasing at an exponential rate. This does not mean that time itself will speed up, but the time in between major technological advances will decrease greatly. The reader realizes then that if the intelligence of technology is increasing exponentially it will not be long at all until it exceeds human intelligence. Kurzweil goes on to make his predictions which show that this is happening as he
Nicholas Carr in his essay, "Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, gives a serious warming to the negative impact to people’s brains which is caused by the overmuch using of the Internet. First of all, Carr states the common phenomenon in using the Internet to be a resource which regards almost any information. In addition, Carr expresses that the convenience in using the Internet is destroying our independence in reading, writing and working and make us be accustomed to do any things relying on the Internet. On the other hands, Carr claims that the Internet is become the new largest distraction in our lives. The overload information is fulfill our lives and discourage us to pay attention to the actually objects of our work.
The internet is one of the most powerful and complex pieces of technology ever to be assembled. With this power, the internet can radiate some seismic waves into the way we live our lives. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr, he illustrates and explains his personal opinion and evidence from others to display the changes and effects the internet has on the world and the people in it. He goes into and explains how the internet is changing the way we read and take in information using his own personal experience with reading books today. He also shows that the internet itself is causing the world to change and adapt to its presence, causing essentially any aspect of the world to be engulfed by the internet and transform according
Reading is harder, focusing is difficult, books are a thing of the past. In an intriguing article “Is Google Making Us Stupid” Nicolas Carr explains how the internet is affecting people’s cognitive ability to function. Since the creation of the internet, information has become more readily available, but at the cost of the human brains cognitive ability. Carr states that artificial technologies have an effect on the brains cognitive ability because its causing us to change our habits for the artificial technology. He writes about Friedrich Nietzsche a writer “[who’s] vision was failing, [who couldn’t keep] his eyes focused on a page [without it] becom[ing] exhausting and painful” (Carr 3).
Stephen Hawking believes, “The development of full artificial intelligence [AI] could spell the end of the human race.” Technology is like a drug, people become addicted and can't go without it. A study has shown that at least 84% of worldwide phone users say they couldn’t go a single day without their mobile device in their hand. And that 26% of car accidents are caused by phone usage. In brief, technology can destroy human.
One of the main predictions that Ray Bradbury got right about the future is the vast increased use of technology. Possibly
The power and capability of technology has grown significantly over the past five years. Further research has been done as these advanced technologies has been implemented into numerous things such as, autonomous driving cars, drones, and robots. These devices are taking over tasks that has been done by humans in the past. These devices soon may be smarter than humans in the future as an event called the singularity may occur. Singularity is the "hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence and other technologies have become so advanced that humanity undergoes a dramatic and irreversible change" (oxford).
Both stories are trying to warn people about the dangers of technology. Technology is created to help humans and create new opportunities for a better future. But, could what was initially created to help us end up overpowering its creators. With our human nature of greed, our thirst for evolution and improvements in technology causes us our chances of a future and leads us into being emotionless robots. We humans must make sure that the machines are helping us, not controlling us.
The idea of creating an artificial intelligence is becoming ever more popular in our society. Featured in movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, and Ex Machina, many present artificial intelligence as mysterious entities that are dangerous to society as a whole. As the technology that humanity has at its disposal continues to improve, many fear that the threat artificial intelligence presents in these movies will become a reality. Even Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX said that artificial intelligence presents a “fundamental existential risk for human civilization” (Sullyman).
Futuristic setting is shown in two main quotes. “As the society reminds us, there 's a difference between knowledge and technology. Knowledge doesn’t fail us. ”(Condie 31). This quote shows us they have a lot more knowledge than we do right now.
What this means is the things that are being continuously made are changing our critical thinking skills. Thompson central claim is that computers are not as smart as humans, but once you have been using them over a certain amount of time you seem to get better at working them and that’s what really makes you more efficient in using them. The point that I don’t agree with Carr on is “Their thoughts and actions fell scripped, as if they're following the steps of an algorithm (p.328.)” I don’t agree with Carr’s argument here because he’s emphasizing that human thoughts are being scripted and we don’t think about things critically, but not all of our thinking
As time has gone on, technology has become an increasingly large part of our lives. The advances that have been made in technology are stunning, and it is only going to continue to develop. While the thought is scary and hard to accept, one day, technology will be able to do everything that we that we can do, and more. In the story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, the idea of technology becoming better than man is emphasised by the author 's use of symbolism, imagery and syntax. make introduction little bit longer.
As time passes, we will continue to be introduced to new creations which will be far more superior than what we have at the moment. In the meantime, we will have machines and robots who are not ‘perfect’ yet. For an example, in Isaac Asimov’s Reason, Cutie’s cognitive development is not complete yet. “The question that immediately arose was! Just what is the cause of my existence?
— Bill Gates Bottom Line Artificial intelligence was once a sci-fi movie plot but it is now happening in real life. Humans will need to find a way to adapt to these breakthrough technologies just as we have done in the past with other technological advancement. The workforce will be affected in ways difficult to imagine as for the first time in our history a machine will be able to think and in many cases much more precisely than
Artificial Intelligence has “shaped the way we are living”[4] whether it is socially or scientifically it has formed great importance in our
The works of intelligence by advanced machinery or software is a common way to describe Artificial Intelligence which can make tasks less difficult for humans. Alan Turing, a mathematician who desires to discover whether machines could have the ability to think, established the concept of Artificial Intelligence. Numerous people perceived Turing’s stand negatively. These individuals are sceptic of its possibility the reason being, at that time, Turing does not have any solid evidence to support his claim. Instead, he turned their views against them by countering with any possible loopholes he has found using his high-level intellect (Sharkey, 2012).
