They tried to keep the wealth who created it. They demanded the unlimited silver and gold at legal ratio of 16 to 1. They also demanded graduated income tax. They also want liberal pensions to ex-union sailors and soldiers.

During the era of the Gilded age, America industrialized at a previously unprecedented rate and became the greatest industrial producer across the globe. With the rapid growth of businesses, common citizens became worried that the government would become indifferent, with only the interests of the wealthy businessmen and businesses. This could be seen in many political cartoons of the time period, which often saw monopolists and businessmen looking down at their workers or other ordinary people. The Populists, who consisted of rural farmers and other workers, attempted to reform both federal and state governments and ultimately failed. However, the more educated and higher social status Progressive reformers found more success in their efforts.

Out of all the effects of the Populist party, the effect with the greatest impact is the idea that the downtrodden could organize and have political impact. The very recent example of this was the rise of the Tea Party in this last election. Unfairness and unaccomplished goals can lead a faction of a group to rise from the ashes and spread like a wildfire. The Gilded Age was an age of rapid economic growth. Railroads, factories, and mines were slowly popping up across the country, creating a variety of new opportunities for entrepreneurs and laborers alike. These new inventions and opportunities created “...an unprecedented accumulation of wealth” (GML, 601). But the transition of America from a small farming based nation to a powerful industrial one created a huge rift between social classes. Most people were either filthy rich or dirt poor, with workers being the latter.

The Gilded Age brought about the Populist movement which occurred because the poor people of America wanted a chance at economic wealth. The first populist movement occurred in 1867 when the “Grange” or “Patrons of Husbandry” farmer’s union called for regulation of railroad shipping rates instead of the “natural monopoly” that was occurring at the time. The Interstate Commerce Commission was created in 1887 because of the “Grange” movement. Although, railroads corporations were so wealthy they could buy around government regulations. The ICC remained ineffective until President Theodore Roosevelt.

The term“Gilded Age” was actually coined by Mark Twain who satired the Gilded Age with a GoldenAge.

Imagine working sixteen hours a day in an unsanitary, dangerous, place for a big business gaining two dollars. This is what laboring-class Americans had to go through during the Gilded age. Politically, the first largest American labor union was formed during the Gilded age and many other organizations formed as well as violent strikes. Socially, different ethnics joined together to share their thoughts and realize the evils of big business and of the federal government. Mentally, most we 're losing their personal life while some were financially stable and glad.

The 19th century was a period of widespread social, economical and political problems in the United States, from the 1890s to the 1920s in need of reform. Both parties were created by the people’s dissatisfaction with the government and its ability to appeal to the majority. The Populist movement was founded my farmers, laborers and middle class civilians that wanted government regulation in the economy, more authority in the government, educating immigrants, to prevent government corruption and high positions to be based on experience.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.

Because they were never in office, they didn’t have the power to go through with any of their plans. They could only advocate for each individual objective. For example, one of their biggest ambitions was unlimited coinage of silver, to allow the use of both silver and gold to back up paper money. Allowing silver to be used for currency would put more money into the country, allowing farmers to charge more for their crops. However, this idea was shot down by President William McKinley, a Republican, when he passed the Gold Standard Act in 1900.

The Gilded Age truly revolutionized American consumerism and commerce. This change, both positive and negative, was due to the extreme desire of businessmen and investors to achieve maximum profit. During the Chicago World Fair, at least temporarily, the economy boomed as investors sought to create new hotels, restaurants, and other public venues that would profit off of the large amount of visitors. Investors and businessmen constantly thought of new ways and strategies to attract consumers and more importantly, capital. A clear example of the new strategies employed by investors was the selling of water from Waukesha at the World Fair.

Industrialist had a huge impact on the gilded age. The gilded age was a rapid expansion of industrialism and a massive jump in the population of immigrants in america. The industrialist during the gilded age such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt had a big impact because of their businesses. Vanderbilt was the first of the three to be a leader of industry. Vanderbilt made millions using the railroad system and built an empire with them.

The decade between 1890 and 1900 expressed a crucial time in the United States of America’s history. Many people experienced struggles throughout this time while others prospered. Mark Twain suggested that despite the significant achievements of the United States, Americans experienced poverty. This statement is an accurate description of the lively hood people experienced in their daily lives during the Gilded Age whether it was positive or negative. Many people during this time period focused on the positive outcomes that resulted from the Gilded Age such as new inventions, the gospel of wealth, additions of land to the country, urbanization, and middle-class improvements.

Farmers and Industrial Workers in the Gilded Age In a time when industrialization was booming, immigrants were racing towards the “American Dream”, and cities were growing towards the sky, the United States was thriving. As a country, the United States went from rural, to mostly urban, which made America “the world’s largest industrial power” as stated by John Green. Since the U.S. had become mostly urban, this left the very few rural workers (farmers), and even some of the industrial workers unhappy. What was the Gilded Age and why did Mark Twain refer to it as such? To help understand this question, one must know the meaning of the word gild. Per Merriam Webster, the term gild means to “to give an attractive but often deceptive appearance to” (Gild, n.d.). After the Civil War the American people had become tired of all the corruption and simply wanted to see an end to it and to have a stable economy. The Gilded Age was fashioned to be prosperous times for all Americans, promising wealth, and an end to past political corruption.
