Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton

The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E. Hinton and takes place in Oklahoma during the 1960s. One theme in this novel that stands out most to me is loyalty. The story is told by Ponyboy Curtis, and illustrates his conflict with right and wrong in his world, where he feels like an outsider. Loyalty to Ponyboy means giving and receiving honor, integrity, trust, support, family, pride, honesty and faithful to those closest to him.

When indisputable evidence is presented, would time be spent to double check this evidence? Especially when the fate of another’s life is in your hands? During that choice would stereotypes and prejudices be placed aside in order to choose that fate? The answer can be drawn from within Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose as it entertains while teaching lessons that one day could change the fate of a total stranger as the drama and the need for justice increases within the play.

The stereotypes in The Outsiders aren’t as fair to the Greasers as they are to the Socs. Many automatically assume what people are like by their clothes or how they act around adults. The stereotypes are the complete opposite in this book and it isn’t fair to the Greasers. Many people in The Outsiders see the Socs as these perfect people that do everything right. Magazines show how good the Socs are at sports and school.

“You know my name, not my story. You've heard what I've done, but not what I've been through,” wrote Jonathan Anthony Burkett in his book Neglected But Undefeated. This ideology is the basis of misjudgement. People jump to conclusions based on stereotypes, what they see in the moment, and what they have heard. If taken too far, a misinterpretation of one’s character can lead to them losing everything.

Stereotypes can confine people to a box and make them feel that they have limits to who they are. Assumptions can have a negative effect on people, and change how people think of themselves. Stereotypes are explored in the novel The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton. The novel touches upon ways rich and poor people are different, but also have their similarities. When examining their lives, their actions do not match up to their appearance, and they have pretty similar lives after all.

Ponyboy’s vs the Socs The fiction book the,”The Outsiders,” by S.E. Hilton tells the reader about the ongoing fighting between the west side and the east side in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1965. Hilton writes about a young greaser or east sider and his family fight against the Socs or West siders. In the novel you see ponyboy’s view of the Socs and how it evolves from the beginning of the book to the end.

This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future. First of all, Socs and greasers have a trademark that showed who was part of their gang, Socs are know for Mustangs, Madras, and leather jackets;

The book, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton is about brother hood and friendship. Is also about two gangs called the Greasers and the Soc's constantly arguing and fighting. Constantly fighting about their gangs placement in their cities, girls, and where they can and can't go. In the first chapter, fighting comes up right away. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. Stereotyping is an issue that affects all ages, genders, and races. Not all stereotypes are bad, but when you maliciously stereotype it becomes a problem. In S.E. Hinton’s young adult novel The Outsiders, stereotyping is a significant issue. There are two gangs in this novel, the “greasers”, and the “Socs”. The greasers live on the east side and are known as “hoods”.

Ponyboy was genuinely upset about his hair, therefore he accepts his appearance as a greaser, as well. Ponyboy is negatively affected by the stereotype because he gets into multiple legal problems. He is forced to go to court because his friend, Johnny, killed a Soc named Bob. “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped, or someone come by and scream “Greaser!” at them, which doesn’t make you feel too hot, if you know what I mean” (2).

In this book report I will talk about the book “The outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton, I will do a review of the story, the point of view, theme, symbols and my opinion about this book I really liked to read for the English class. The story is about a boy named Ponyboy who lived in a small town in Texas with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop were a gang war was taking place between two different social class people: The Socs and the Greasers.
