Success And Failure During The Progressive Era

Early twentieth century was an era of many changes in which the American industrial Revolution created a huge amount of economic wealth and social prosperity never seen in human history. The progressive movement aimed to fix corruption in government and business, equal rights of women and other groups. In the late 1800s the progressive movement achieved most of their aims. Economic growth opened up gap between the poor and the rich, and industrialization led to unsafe working conditions and crowded cities. Populist had protested what they saw as unfair business practices and had pressed the government action to stop them.

The Progressive Era was a time in United States history when social and political ideologies formed as a response to rapid industrialization. This period lastly roughly from 1895-1920 and is the focus of David E. Alsobrook’s article in the April 2002 issue of The Alabama Review. Alsobrook’s commentary focuses on the port city of Mobile, AL and the progressive reorganizations that occurred in the city the decades after reconstruction. He argues that the reforms of the city were caused by the influx of entrepreneurs brought by newly completed railroads. These businessmen were successful in obtaining leadership roles previously reserved for those of the gentry class (i.e. cotton plantation owners) and had different concepts of what made a successful

Between the 1890s and World War One, reform efforts started taking place by the progressives. The progressives were not a single unified group and even had some contradicting goals. They were middle class urban dwellers and some were women. The progressives wanted to end prostitution, Americanize immigrants, antitrust legislation created, women’s suffrage, and the start of prohibition.

How the Progressive Era shaped the U.S. The Progressive Era was “a time period ranging from the 1890s to the 1920s that included purification of the government, modernization, a focus on improvement on working conditions, and women’s suffrage” (Lumenlearning). Most of America’s flaws, which ranged from economic issues to political representation, were mended during the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era has had the most significant impact on the development of America because of the laws and acts passed during the Progressive Era. To begin,The Progressive Era is the most impactful time period for America because many meaningful laws and reforms were passed.

Much of the writing that has been published regarding the Progressive era has helped propel it forward as a time of “prosper, middle-class control,” in the minds of young Americans across the nation. Generally considered a highpoint of American political history, the Progressive era has been a benefactor of positive reporting in textbooks through much of history. Although, its alleged connection to socialism caused a significant change in reporting during the years of the Second Red Scare. The Progressives Era was semi successful in terms of reforming society for the rights of the middle class, women, children, and the poor. During this time three new amendments were passed in effort to change the american society. Politically, during this era the 17th amendment was passed allowing direction election of senators, and put the initiative and referendum law into place. The 16th amendment created a graduated income tax and the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. Socially, reformers worked on getting workers a shorter work day, eliminating child labor, and fixing health issues.

The Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) During the Era of Progressivism, which lasted approximately from 1890s to1920s, some reforms were made to deal with the socio-economic crisis which the United States faced at that time. Among the most prominent political figures of that period are the two presidents, Theodore Roosevelt of the Republicans and Woodrow Wilson of the Democrats. In our paper, we will consider the situation that America was in and elaborate why those reforms were needed. After that, we will compare the policies of the named two presidents.

The Progressive Era had mainly focused on improving social and economic issues such as poverty, violence, greed, class structure, monopolies and trusts, corruption and etc. I, Jane Addams, am a middle class woman and a progressive worker who has been one of the many who have faced constant unethical social conditions that occurs along the urban streets following rapid industrialization in America. I have witnessed that the influx of immigrants who’ve migrated to America have struggled in engaging in the numerous opportunities America has to offer; due to them lacking an education and knowledge in various areas. I propose that a solution to this problem would be establishing settlement houses to where I suggest it would assist and provide social and educational services to predominantly immigrant residents to who subside in crowded streets of America. One of my closest friends, Ellen Gates Starr, and I have pondered on the idea of naming one of the many settlement houses to be named the “Hull House” where it would be located in Chicago and also provide such services to those in nearby communities and neighborhoods as well.

The world before the first world war was a very different place. The automobile existed. Few people, however, owned one. As a result street traffic had many horses and buggies. The most common means of transportation was the bicycle.

Progressives strived to improve the quality of urban life through parks and recreation, housing, poor relief, work safety, health care, etc. For example, Johnson, a mayor of Cleveland, reformed the police department

The Progressive Era was a period which strengthened America. People were tired of unfair treatment and set out for change during the 1800-1900’s. They used many different forms of media to show the public the cruel truth of what happened around them. In order to do so, these progressives chose issues they wanted to reform and exposed those issues to the public, for instance, Upton Sinclair’s novel, The Jungle, which exposed the meatpacking industry. Reformers fixed many political, social, and economic issues.

During the progressive era our country faced many problems. The rise of substantial businesses caused industrial problems. Women suffrage, alcohol, child labor, and safety issues caused social problems. The necessitation of citizens in government decisions also caused political problems. Progressives were people who wanted to solve all of these quandaries.

After the Civil War, our country was battered and beaten, but it rebuilt itself over time and spread its policies, as well as manufacturing practices, throughout our country. Early in the 20th century, members of our nation started to look at some of these practices and policies and began to question their merit and whether they assisted our population or not. Many people were involved in the progressive movement in America from the presidents to a slew of popular authors and photographers. The one thing that they had in common was that they saw problems with how various industries in our nation performed that they knew needed to be fixed. They did not always agree on everything, such as immigration, but they always had the nation’s best interest at heart.

The Progressive era was widespread social activism and political reform from 1890-1920. . This was to help stop problems caused by corruption in the goverment. They wanted senators be elected was only if chosen by state legislates but the only way senators could be elected was if they were elected by citizens. This movement pointed out political machines and bosses. Progressives soon realized that improving conditions for the poor required broader political efforts at both the state and federal levels.”

The Progressive Era was pretty during the first twenty years of the twentieth century due to the fact that the reformers were mainly focused on progress in many different areas. Reformers who were interested in progress tried to improve the life of workers, the poor, rural people, and immigrants. They also tried to improve the education systems, as well as public health systems. Another thing they worked on improving is getting people more involved in politics, make businesses somewhat more responsible, make sure that taxing would be done right, and banning alcohol. They figured that if they could ban alcohol, it would help to increase people’s morals.
