The most successful progressive president was Theodore Roosevelt since he really utilized the power of the federal government; he was able to improve health conditions for the AMerican public; on top of that he was able to improve the environmental conditions for AMerica. Roosevelt was able to use his power as president and head of the federal government by organizing peaceful negotiations with coal miners and their supervisors in the coal strike of 1902. In the coal strike of 1902, the miners went on protest demanding a 20% raise and a nine hour work day. The Progressive Era was a period full of political reform and social activism. One major characteristic of this era was the call for higher efficiency in government. Reformers attacked inefficiency in government, which led to the government reorganizing agencies to eliminate redundancy. This era was also marked by a graduated federal income tax, a new national banking system and a governmental attempt to conserve natural resources. During the Progressive Era, there was a large call for social reform including: prohibition, the right to vote for women, child labor laws and an eight hour work day.

Between the 1890s and World War One, reform efforts started taking place by the progressives. The progressives were not a single unified group and even had some contradicting goals. They were middle class urban dwellers and some were women. The progressives wanted to end prostitution, Americanize immigrants, antitrust legislation created, women’s suffrage, and the start of prohibition.

Often times, many people are associated with the Progressive Era. However, the most important people in the time period are the presidents, because they are the people in charge of making changes to politics and helping society, whether it be about consumers, women, children, nature, or otherwise. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson made great impacts during the Progressive Era. Most of the changes that happened at that time still impact our lives today.

There was many successes and failures during the Progressive Era, however to me the most important success was the women suffrage and the biggest failure was child labor. Women suffrage was a success because it allowed women to vote. For instance, women were not listen to during this time this in fact anger the women. However, after fighting for so long woman could vote and give their opinion. Women suffrage was also a success because ever since then women have become consider to making decisions such as choosing the next president.

The Progressive Era was a reconstruction period which took place between the years of 1890 to 1920. In this time many changes and reforms were enacted for the people of the United States. This era was driven in part by one of the best and most influential presidents of our country, Theodore Roosevelt. In his two terms he shaped how Americans lived in this country for the better by his program called the “Square Deal” that started in the early 1900’s.
