Being one of the highest profitable countries, the United States has been actively changing the way that school lunches are served all across America. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act has played a major role in making school lunches healthier. This act prevents schools from excessively serving pizza, french fries, chicken wings and other savory foods (Murphy, 2015). Lunches now must be lower in fat, calories and sodium, therefor, lunches also must provide lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain. The Food and Nutrition Service and the USDA, have put in place specific rules that focus on improving school lunches and breakfasts. Some of those rules are offering milk that is fat-free, require students to have a fruit or vegetable as a part of their meal, prepare meals using ingredients that contain zero grams of trans fat per serving. Changes need to be made in order to produce lunches that are natural and appealing. Like multiple countries, sourcing ingredients from local farmers plays an important role in creating meals for the students. In the United States essentially all the ingredients are frozen and premade. Multitudinous amounts of frozen meals have preservatives and high amounts of salt. By eliminating frozen meals from all school lunches, sodium levels would significantly decrease. If schools utilize local farmers and businesses, the ingredients used would be incredibly fresh and tasty. This also promotes small businesses and farmers around the community. Cha makes it obvious that she is in support and on the defensive side for the school lunch program. I believe that Cha does this because she is able to see that creating a lunch program that is affordable, efficient and appetizing to all students, is nearly impossible and she is doing her very best show that efforts are being expended to do this. Cha writes of the studying of students served lunch and the actual intake. Many results were showing that students were choosing not to eat the foods that students are lacking the most. Students learn how to interact with other kids their age, be respectful, make new friends, and overall mature to become the best they can be, while also being prepared for life after school. In order for these students to not only learn the school subjects that are stepping stones for the rest of their academics, careers, and future jobs. Students need other time in school to work on these other important skills, lunch is this exact time. In order to maximize students conversing and making connections, all students should see each other as equals and companions. Some trials have failed but some have succeeded at the trail for their public school. But some administrators what it to come to all schools, for the fact that they are losing money because kids stopped eating lunches at school.
Is it chicken? It is probably neither, as ninety percent of meat used in school lunches is processed. In addition, students are forced eat fruits that are often tiny and bruised. Quite literally, we cannot sit down to eat unless we have a fruit or vegetable on our tray. Our healthy options are not very enticing—instead of an apple slightly bigger than a fist, shining red like a ruby, we receive a spotted excuse of a fruit.
Although changing the school lunch to a healthier, better option would be a good idea, you should not change the lunch from what it is now. Even though the kids would be eating healthier, most of the kids that eat lunch now would not buy the new lunch, also kids not buying the new lunch means not as much money comes into the school, and if you want kids to be healthier all you have to do is give them more time to be active. To begin with, if you changed the lunch at school a lot of the kids that eat lunch now would not eat lunch if you changed it. The new lunches would not taste as good as the lunches they serve now. Taking away some of the kids favorite foods is not a good idea.
Cafeteria food in schools is made to be healthy for students, but is it really healthy for students if they think it is foul and do not want to eat it? Should schools change the healthy foods to foods that students would actually want to eat? School food’s job is to be healthy and tasty to get the students through their day, but sadly school lunches tend to miss the mark on both accounts. Public schools rely on money from the government to supply food to their students, but due to several cutbacks the thing served in the cafeteria is hardly food at all.
