Cultural competence is vital in the nursing profession, one any given day the nurse is working with patients from multiple different cultures. It is crucial that the nurse give the patient cultural competent cares, which allow the patient to receive the best quality care that he or she needs. Cultural competence is defined as the “awareness and understanding of unique characteristics of a group’s social and cultural attributes, health beliefs, and values, but also encompasses interventions that reflect this awareness” (Cope, 2015, p. 305). After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. I do understand that with training, I will start to gain cultural competence but it will take consistent individual practice on my part to develop and maintain individual cultural competence. Cultural competency is increasingly important in healthcare today. In America today, we are facing a lot of tension between cultures today. America is a very diverse country with many cultures co-existing and in order to properly care for patients professionals need to be able to understand and tend to their cultural needs. Whether it be a difference in language, understanding that someone is a veteran and how that may affect them psychologically, or any other set of circumstances that surround a specific culture. Having the knowledge and resources that cater to different cultures makes for better experiences across the board and, consequently, makes for more effective healthcare visits.

In regards of your post here I agree that Cultural Competencies are a set of beliefs that needs to be taught and passed on from an early age and preferable long before people are taking courses that relate to Human Services and working with different populations. While class room and work experiences are a great start I question if it is enough when a worker in this field goes home after 8 hours and relapses back into her or his own cultural experiences. For me, cultural competence is all about understanding the culture, belief and value of other people and your own. It is how we deal with our own and other people’s conviction. For one’s self, it is being culturally aware of how the world works and how each culture is different from each other. It is acquiring knowledge of other people’s customs and achieving cultural skills to share to everyone. It is our willingness to value other people’s way of life and accepting them openly.
The way a person thinks about health, “whether that is our ‘philosophy’, our ‘worldview’, our ‘framework’ influences what we do as individuals in practice,” as well as how we deliver the health service. These elements allow us to think about healthcare in our own culturally acceptable way, this isn’t always an acceptable way of delivering the service to people with views different to our own. Cultural competence is an approach that aids in influencing the service and the education of healthcare professionals. (Taylor, K., & Guerin, P., 2010). Cultural competence is defined as a knowledge and understanding of cultures, histories and contemporary realities and awareness of protocols, combined with the proficiency to engage and work effectively in a cultural context congruent to the expectations of the people of that culture.
Cultural competency: Indians Culture competency is defined as one has the knowledge, the abilities and the skill to deliver care congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Purnell, 2013). As a nurse or a health care provider, increasing ones consciousness of culture diversity improves the possibilities for health care practitioners to provide competent care (Purnell, 2013). Nurses and all health care providers should be aware of other cultures to provide the best care that they can for that individual. Developing a relationship with diverse cultural groups involves good interpersonal skills and the application of knowledge and techniques learned from the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as the humanities (Purnell, 2013). I am choosing to select the Indian culture for my first assignment.
Leininger’s theory was effectively applied and incorporated in ANA scope and standard number eight culturally congruent practice. It is the application of evidence-based nursing that is in agreement with the preferred cultural values, beliefs, worldview, and practices of the healthcare consumers and other stakeholders. The theory demonstrates respect, equity, and empathy in actions and interactions with all healthcare consumers. Nurses and health care workers applied to practice by participating in lifelong learning to understanding cultural preferences, choices, and decision-making processes of diverse consumers. Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. This class gave me the opportunity to view situations from a different perspective, especially through the weekly discussion boards and peer responses. Learning from classmate can teach more valuable lessons than listening to boring lectures or reading hundreds of pages in a textbook because it is easier to relate to experience rather than hypothetical situations. Cultural competence is about respecting the diversity of all cultures present in your center and the wider community. Showing sensitivity and awareness towards all cultures and representing them with-in your center. To communicate with the different culture families with-in the center and community to aid in better knowledge, resources and activities to promote these cultures.
Care provided this way would support healing, enhance patient experience and lead to faster discharge. Nursing from my experience, are culturally sensitive and adjusted accordingly to a variety of requests from patients and accommodated most of them. Nursing staff today works with a diverse population and it is important to stay professional and culturally sensitive. Nurses should assess their own knowledge, feelings and values when providing care for patients from different backgrounds. It also important to know about different cultures and increase personal cultural awareness (Leishman, 2004).
