White Fragility is a term coined by Dr. Robin DiAngelo meaning “a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves.” DiAngelo believes white people in North America live in a social environment that insulates them from race-based stress, due to their privilege as part of the cultural majority. The idea of white fragility entails that members of the Caucasian race do not struggle as much as minorities and, through their ignorance, they believe they understand and can relate to the struggles minorities endure on a daily basis. Director Jordan Peele demonstrates this concept of white fragility through his thriller suspense film, Get Out. This film to transports the viewer to the perspective of the white dominance in America towards minorities and how powerful their role of control is in the U.S. Through projecting some of his own fears, Peele approach this horrifying reality through dark plot twists and comedic satire. During the second scene of the film, when introduced to the protagonist of the film, Chris Washington, the song “Redbone” by Childish Gambino plays. The ending of this lyric relates to Chris Washington that later through the movie must not close his eyes in the sunken place and must stay woke to realize the situation he will shortly be put in. Peele introduces this song to inform the viewer that they must be socially aware and awake to avoid danger and being taken advantage of in life. “Get Out” is a spin chilling story yet with a touch of comedy, illustrating what it means to be black in America, to summarize, a black photographer called Chris goes on a trip with Rose, his white girlfriend to visit her parents. Worried that Rose’s parents might be racist, he later discovers that the family has several black “servants” who behave oddly, as if they are controlled. He is later unsettled by the visitors at the party who made racially-charged and gauche comments, chuckling over Chris’s built body and announcing, “Black is in fashion!” Chris later realized the chill that he had sensed was right on the mark. The Armitage family turn out not just to be racist, but to be abusing as well as profiting from abducting blacks.
It also explores the minority poor demonization to serve political ends contributing to minority unrealistic fear by the whites and to persistent police brutality problems against the minority communities. Videos taken by bystanders and by use of cams worn by officers and some placed in police cars show how the unarmed minorities were fatally shot by the police in minor confrontations in the 21st century. The film “Dear White People” written and produced by Justin Simien is based on a campus culture war at an ivy league University. The University mainly consisting of white students causes mayhem when a Halloween party occurs and actions take things too far. Justin focused on four black students, their encounters and interactions with their peers. One character in particular brings me to my topic of race. Samantha White, a biracial student who is set on fixing things on campus between white and black students.
In 2017, comedian Jordan Peele released Get Out, a horror movie that follows Chris Washington, a young black man, meeting his girlfriend’s family for the first time. The conflict arises from the tension created due to the fact that Rose, his girlfriend, and her family, the Armitages, are white. They pride themselves on being liberals who “would’ve voted for Obama a third time” but support black stereotypes (Moiz). Peele writes them to represent white liberalism which is those who identify with the Democrat party but are hypocritical in their actions towards minority groups. Peele portrays the hypocrisy through satirical horror, but unlike traditional horror films “the terror isn’t some usual monster, ghost, or other menace, but it is actually white people and their racism” (Moiz).
No matter what goes on the scale of power always tips back to the white citizens of the country just because of their skin color. Racism continues to be an issue that causes a great deal of tension in the United States. While some believe that we are living in a post-racial society, others are aware that racism can take different forms in this day and age. In White Bound: Nationalists, Antiracists, and the Shared Meanings of Race, author Matthew Hughey tackles the topic of racism in a unique way. Hughey focuses on how the members of the two groups that he conducted the study on conceptualize their whiteness and how that relates to racism. Hughey spend a little over one year conducting his research for this project.

Wherever we may come from, we can do amazing things in this world. In this world, every human being can be anything they strive to be. Lupe Fiasco released the inspirational song, “The Show Goes On,” on October 26, 2010, as the first single from his third studio album Lasers. He uses motivational and inspirational phrases to motivate the audience to never give up even if they are going through the hardest parts of their lives. Fiasco uses his past to connect to the targeted audience, that being the less fortunate families and those who grew up in harsh conditions.
Countless amount of times I have seen the same films being shown on television about blacks. Rarely, do you come across a film genre that shows white majority not being trustworthy? The message that the film wants to explain is that on the surface whites appear civilized, but hidden inside is a racial cruelty that can be stirred through manipulation. Something that stuck with me in this film “Open borders which will render the White Majority a minority, and White people losing their jobs to illegals who both replace workers and undercut wages, are legitimate concerns.
