“ADHD & Me” is a compelling true story about Blake E. S. Taylor. We, as the readers of his memoir, follow his journey with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the struggles he faces. His story shows the readers a different perspective of the hyperactive and impulsive child. It shows that a child with ADHD is not out of control and should be given more opportunities to learn, grow, and discover whom they are. Blake’s story is a great way to learn and understand that those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are able to live happy and successful lives. “Mrs. Sellars was informed at the beginning of the year about the fact that I have ADHD, but she doesn’t believe it’s an excuse to not do well on an exam” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 13). This quote directly shows us how the teachers at his school do not understand that having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not something that a person can control and taking exams are hard for those with ADHD. When I was in elementary school, a student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder did something wrong and was not allowed to play with us outside. This book discusses a memory Blake had in fifth grade where he was in trouble and lost recess time for a week. “You are being punished. Don’t try to avoid it” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 121), is what the teacher told him after his attempt to escape to play outside. Loosing recess time is poor decision, especially for a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder because of the extra energy they have. There are several, more effective ways to punish a child. Blake discussed his ideal school situation. He said that you should “go to a school where your differences are respected and accepted” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 158). “Everyone wants to have friends, but making friends is hard for kids with ADHD” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 73). Once Blake makes a friend, he feels like he achieved something great, as any child would. “Having one friend was an accomplishment for an ADHD kid like me” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 67). Patients with this type of ADHD generally avoid tasks that involve more than minimal effort, have the inability to understand or follow instructions or don’t listen to them, and are forgetful. Kevin has trouble with other children, as he is very easily distracted. We can see how he doesn’t get picked for sports often because while playing, he will be distracted by clouds or other things. Sir Ken Robinson’s RSA Animate: Changing Education Paradigms illustrates the problems of prescribing medication to students who are identified to have ADD or ADHD. It brings a new perspective to mind as to how we, as teachers, are teaching these students. Students with ADD or ADHD are many a time to be considered a distraction in school because of their overly-active habits. However, I think this idea says a lot more about teachers; it highlights a certain laziness or inability because we are unable or maybe don’t want to deal with their disruptive habits, and they want everything to go smoothly. However, I believe that every day, especially in education, is going to be unpredictable.

I believe that my ADHD creates challenges in my job such as getting off track, not always finishing everything assigned to me, and the tendency to talk with my coworkers instead of doing my job. Despite the challenges I face in the work environment, I have to give myself reminders on what I am supposed to be doing and try to make more of an effort to get my job done. In addition to the obstacles I face in the work environment, ADHD provides additional obstacles in the relationships that I have with my family and friends. I do not share the fact that I have ADHD with my friends and that I need to take medicine just to feel and operate normal, so I occasionally feel alone or bad about my schoolwork knowing that I have to work harder for the grades I receive. Similarly, issues arise within my family because my parents have the tendency to get upset when I forget to finish my chores, or my desk is a mess and unorganized.

Schools need to change the environment if they want students with ADHD to re-engage in class. Don’t make them feel different, they are unique in their own ways. In Brooks article he says, “School have to engage people as they are. That requires leaders who insist on more cultural diversity in school: not just teachers who celebrate cooperation, but other teachers who celebrate competition; not just teachers who honor environmental virtues, but teachers who honor military virtues...”, he is saying that schools needs to teach kids as they are and to keep in mind that not everyone is the same, physically and mentally. The brain and central nervous system problems, with a child on the spectrum, will include issues such as: poor coordination, balance, memory, attention, processing speed, reasoning, intellect, judgment, mood regulation, and difficulties with hyperactivity. Even though this list of challenges is long, it is important to know that there are just as many social and behavioral problems as well. Children with FAS tend to have difficulty in school. Their ability to stay on task and set goals, such as research papers present a large challenge to children with FAS. They also have poor social skills, causing trouble getting along with others.

School had always been known to help and educated children’s of all ages, but when it comes to certain situation, school is like another home for children. It provided a new life for children’s and help them regain and improve on their mental stress. For example, Barry ran away from home at night to come to school because it the only place she feels content after her parent argument that night. Without even recognizing that she is gone like any other family do, Barry feel happy because she had more time to spend on school every morning just to paint and draw.
I have been faced with many challenges with ADHD. It affects every aspect of my life including my behavior, my mood and most of all my cognitive and organizational skills. My late diagnosis made it difficult to accept and understand what was happening. First I was diagnosed with defiant child syndrome because I was not respecting my teachers at school, fighting and just being disrespectful.

ADHD can often cause low self-esteem, troubled relationships, and difficulty at school and work. ADHD affected Williams when he was a young child. This especially hurt Williams because of what was happening during his early life.
Children with ADHD sometimes have a hard time controlling their temper. This being due to others or peers nagging at them or getting on their nerves. ADHD is hard to be able for your body to take control. At a young age it is hard to have your mind take control over your body. The three mental ailments associated with ADHD are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Living with these conditions is no easy task. Anyone of those symptoms can individually lead to not having good grades, or even losing track of a simple conversation. Put all of them together and you have a dangerous mix that in undoubtably going to lead to poor school performance and an inept social life, if the proper means are not taken. Therefore, the effectiveness outweighs the risk when it comes to this medication, which in turn makes ADHD medication a promising and efficient treatment for children with attention deficit hyperactivity
