“Never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut” (Quotes from Goodfellas, n.d.). This quote from the 1990 critically acclaimed film Goodfellas encompasses some of the main foundations the American Mafia is built upon. And although this film was a major motion picture created in Hollywood, it was based on a true story and kept most of the key aspects of the Mafia’s culture. The role that family played in each individual sect across the country was unified in the sense that it was, by far, the most important to every member of the American Mafia. In the Mafia’s prime (approximately 1920-1985), it shared enough values with the dominant American culture, while maintaining a good amount of differences, to be considered a U.S. co-culture.

CHOICES “White collar crime” refers to those offenses that are anticipated to generate fiscal gain using some form of dishonesty. This type of crime is usually committed by people in the commercial world who, as a result of their employment position, are able to get a hold of large amounts of other people’s money. “White collar crime” does not involve forceful, drug-related, or blatantly illicit activities. In fact, perpetrators are typically involved in otherwise lawful industries and may hold respectable positions in the community prior to the discovery of their fraudulent schemes. The slogan “white collar crime” was made up in 1939 by Edwin Sutherland during a dialog which he gave to the American Sociological Society.

INTODUCING PROBLEM: Crime in Chicago has been followed by the Chicago Police Office's Department of Records since the start of the twentieth century. The city's general Crime rate, particularly the violent crime rate, is generously higher than the US normal. The explanations behind the higher numbers in Chicago stay misty. An investigation in The Atlantic demonstrates no genuine proof of exact reasons, just speculation.

In the case Maples v. Thomas in 2012, Cory Maples was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in Alabama. In 2001, he sought post-conviction relief in court. He said that his attorneys failed to give him proper representation that is guaranteed by the 6th Amendment. The 6th Amendment states, “Sixth Amendment guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and evidence against you.” Maples felt as if his attorneys were not helping him in his trial.
In the last decades of the nineteenth century, the lynching of the Black people in the Southern and border states became an institutionalized method used by whites to terrorize Blacks and maintain white supremacy. In the South, during the period 1880-1940, there was deep-seated and all-pervading hatred and fear of the Negro which led white mobs to turn to “lynch law” as a means of social control. Lynchings, which are open public murders of individuals suspected of crime conceived and carried out more or less spontaneously by a mob, seem to have been an American invention. In Lynch Law, the first scholarly investigation of lynching, which was written in 1905, author James E. Cutler stated that. “Lynching is a criminal practice which is peculiar to the United States.
There are multiple times in Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky that Raskolnikov’s mentality towards his actions change drastically. Although the ending of Crime and Punishment may suggest that Raskolnikov has a chance at redemption, his mental state is far too inconsistent to come to this conclusion. In one chapter, Raskolnikov is remorseful and deeply regrets his actions, even telling himself that he will confess, but in another, he acts as if he never even committed the crime and he believes that there is no chance of him ever being caught for his wrongdoings. Raskolnikov’s first attitude towards what he has done is shown immediately after he murders Aliona and Lizaveta.
