The Civil War was one of America’s most trying and troubling times. Following the Civil War was Reconstruction, which posed an important question that would affect the country forever, “What do we do with the South?” During Reconstruction, the Government was faced with a plethora of difficult questions to answer and a series of difficult situations, but the topic at hand was the same reason the Civil War started in the first place: African Americans. The statement “After the Civil War, the only way to truly enfranchise former slaves was by effectively disenfranchising their former masters” is true because white Southerners would constantly and consistently attempt to undermine African Americans. There were many ways that white Southerners used to belittle African Americans; the creation of Black Codes were one of these ways.

The changes in this era range from having a different president to making the United States a nation rather than just a country. This essay will explain what the reconstruction era was, what the effects were of the reconstruction, and why the reconstruction in 1877 came to an end. The compromise of 1877 led to the republicans receding from the south as well as a southern democrat being appointed to the republican president’s cabinet. Apart from this there also led to more railroad development to the south which would in turn lead to more industrialization in the south. The compromise helped the south and north work better together and work to be in agreement in order to avoid further tension and disagreements that would further divide the nation. The reconstruction era was an era in which more people began to have a voice and have more freedom but this was not okay with some people because they believed that things did not need to change and they should stay the same way they had been. With a new control in power this would lead to a change in the freedoms people have.

Reconstruction Reconstruction was the time after the Civil War. During the Reconstruction era, our country faced many different challenges. There were multiple failures of Reconstruction, but there were also many successes. It was also a time with many differences and divisions. Many changes happened during the period of Reconstruction.

Washington and DuBois in the Reconstruction Era The Reconstruction Era began in the years following the Civil War in which many African-American slaves finally achieved freedom after centuries of slavery. The Civil War brought about freedom to approximately four million slaves but also brought about a new set of challenges and struggles that the African-American community would have to face. The Reconstruction Era, also known as the Radical Reconstruction, occurred during the years of 1865 and 1877, in which many freed African Americans struggled to assimilate into society while also being faced with numerous societal and economical limitations.

With over 620,000 deaths, the American Civil War was definitely one of the bloodiest wars in history. The battles between the Union and the Confederate troops raged on from 1861 to 1865 and ruined the lives and families of countless people. There were prison camps that tormented their prisoners, animals that were used until death, and diseases that ran rampant throughout the soldiers’ barracks. An average of 504 people died every day due to battle, which is actually a record (Civil War by the Numbers). Countless problems were faced by almost everyone that was a part of the battles, and by those who were only affected in second-hand ways.

There was no sudden start to the civil war. Slavery has been a major issue since the United States gained independence from Great Britain in 1776. Unlike the northern states, the southern states believed in slavery. It was time for the states to be united when Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861. In the past, these differences caused tensions between sections and constant debate

The American Civil War was a war in which competent political management, the capacity to generate economic power, and the capacity of a society to persevere in the face of losses were as important to the conclusion as the outcome of particular battles.

The era of reconstruction came after the civil war. People still argue that the blacks were fully free or not. African Americans were not free during the civil war. This is one example of how african americans were not fully free during the era of reconstruction . African Americans were not allowed to be in the city limits of Opelousas or they will be charged a fine of five dollars and do two days in jail and then work on public street.

Although the implementation of slavery into American life brought with it a great deal of progress, it also set us back years in terms of cohabitation. Slavery came with it a structural bond to the South that was not easily broken. The bond that led to the ultimate conflict would grow and fester through the early parts of American history, only to come to a head when we had to add more states to the Union. If politics had failed then war would have happened a long time before the Civil War. It was politics that lengthened the time between the country’s creation and its true test in civil war.

The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).

The Civil War The Civil War was the deadliest war in American history with over 600000 American deaths reported. This war was fought to keep the Confederate States from leaving the Union. The Union won because they had a telegraph system and had more resources. The effect of the Union victory has had a large impact on society.

The Civil War had started on April 12, 1861 and it is one of the most important wars fought in American history. The reason the chaos had started to spread was when “Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860 as the first Republican president on a platform pledging to keep slavery out of the territories, seven states in the deep south seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America” (Civilwar.org). The war had not yet started but it was inevitable. When seven states denied to be apart of the union it was impossible for war not to come.

In 1865, Abraham Lincoln ended slavery in the United States. While the African Americans became free, they were still not equal. Horrible things were still happening to former slaves, even though the U.S. was trying to reconstruct the country. Reconstruction was a time where former slaves were being integrated into society. The same year slavery was abolished, The Black Codes were created.
