The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell brings up that point that Roland Barthes said, “literature is the question minus the answer.” The Most Dangerous Game is a story about two men named Zaroff and Rainsford who both love hunting because of the thrill. Connell’s story brings up the question, is killing an animal all that different from killing a human. When morals are brought into the understanding of the passage Zaroff and Rainsford can be seen equally evil.
Zaroff is seen as immoral and sinful while Rainsford is seen as completely normal. Zaroff and Rainsford both are skilled hunters, the only difference is Zaroff hunts humans. The question Connell brings up is why is Zaroff seen as the bad guy not Rainsford. Both Zaroff and Rainsford

While reading the passage it comes off like Zaroff is horrible and Rainsford should be praised for killing him but when reading the passage more carefully and thinking about what message Connell wanted to show; the story becomes more meaningful. Rainsford said, “hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (Connell 13). humanity sees hunting animals as a sport but killing a human can result in jail time, Connell wanted to change that idea. The author wanted to show that hunting is a careless sport and whether its killing of animals or humans killing is appalling. Rainsford is yelling at Zaroff for his actions but Zaroff doesn't see why hunting humans is worse than a tiger or bear. Connell is wanting to shower that the act of killing anything should have the same reaction as Rainsford when he found out Zaroff kills people. The view of the story changes because Rainsford starts to look just as bad as Zaroff.
The Most Dangerous Game by Connell has a deeper meaning than what’s shown on the outside. The questions Connell want’s to bring attention to the real morals of hunting. Connell was asking, is hunting any different from killing. Barthes once said, “Literature is the question minus the answer.” The Most Dangerous Game is the perfect example of Barthes quote because Connell opens questions about the values of hunting but he never gives an
Since Zaroff is hunting humans, one of them is most likely to die. Murder can not go unpunished. Rainsford would most likely have died if he didn’t kill Zaroff. Some may say that one should never kill no matter what. Well, if Rainsford himself never killed Zaroff, he would have died.
Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, and the antagonist, General Zaroff, are similar characters.
“The Most Dangerous Game”, is a suspenseful story about two hunters fighting for survival and a struggle to not become the huntee. Zaroff’s inhumane actions lead him to his own death. He has lost the ability to tell a beast from a man, he thought of murder as a game. He believed that he needed a more complicated fight, one that would put him through trouble. Zaroff believed that he had hunted every animal and beast there was and that humans were the fight he was looking for.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford is a hunter who fell off a boat in the middle of no where. As he gets to land he runs into several obstacle courses, then gets to this big house and meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff also hunts, just not animals. He hunts something more dangerous such as humans who boats crashed like Rainsford.
Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
In Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game, the protagonist, Rainsford, experiences drastic character changes when a storm throws him overboard and he swims to what he thinks is safety on Ship-Trap Island. Rainsford, a big-game hunter, becomes stranded there with the insane General Zaroff who is obsessed with hunting. The general immediately recognizes and admires Rainsford as the author of books about hunting. The general welcomes Rainsford into his home, a grand chateau, and treats him with care and respect, but when he starts to talk about hunting, Rainsford realizes something is off. The general brags about how he stocks the island for big-game hunting, claiming that he hunts the most dangerous game--a new animal.
In Richard Connell's short story"The Most Dangerous Game," the protagonist Sanger Rainsford is selfish, unsympathetic, and cruel. In the beginning, Rainsford talks to Whitney about the prey’s, in this case, the animal's perspective while being hunted, like how they feel. Rainsford and Whitney butt heads. Rainsford’s philosophy is much like Zaroff's. Rainsford disagrees with Whitney, who believes that animals can comprehend the fear of pain and death.
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.
When Rainsford first means Zaroff he sees him as a good hunter because of all of his trophies. Not much later Rainsford learns that Zaroff hunts humans, so Rainsford sees how evil a hunter can be. Another way Zaroff drives the theme is to make Rainsford feel like the animals he used to hunt. While Zaroff is hunting Rainsford, he says he now knows the true meaning of terrified; so now he knows how the animals he hunted felt. He also felt how it feels to know there isn’t much of a chance that you are going to survive.
When Rainsford asks if Zaroff hunts cape buffalo, Zaroff states “ ‘[No,] I hunt more dangerous game’ (17)”. This foreshadows him revealing that he hunts men. This builds suspense because the reader doesn’t know yet what this “dangerous game” is, but they know it probably isn’t good. The author utilizes
“The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, is a narrative about Mr. Sanger Rainsford, a celebrated hunter, who finds himself on a secluded island after falling overboard a yacht. Rainsford locates a large building on the island and meets General Zaroff, who invites him to rest and replenish his health in his home. After Zaroff explains that he also enjoys hunting, he also reveals that he has discovered a new, more dangerous animal to hunt: humans. Zaroff forces Rainsford to become the hunted in order to win his freedom and return to the mainland. Connell’s central idea suggests that instinct does not always yield to reason.
The Most Dangerous Game Throughout the globe, people cherish hunting. It can be challenging, but still a great way of entertainment. That idea is very absurd, for many different reasons.
Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change.
