Gun Control: an Argument Dating Back to Before 1776 The debate of gun control dates back 100s of years, and many people want to ban guns so that no one can have them. That statement is complete ignorance to what really goes on. The debate has many different viewpoints with some being as radical as banning guns to create a false sense of Utopia. The recent rise of school shootings has set off a spark of gun control debates that make little sense. What if the school shooter was met by a principal at the door who happened to be carrying a 9mm handgun under his suit where 99.9% of students did not even know it was there? Guns are a very prominent tool that when in the right hands can lead to the saving of people and hunting animals without any harm …show more content…
Many people say that the real weapon used is rage. Guns are not bad things or good things. They are things, inanimate objects, chunks of metal with no will of their own (Medred 2). Why do we as a society not address mental illness more? The majority of all “school shooters” are misfits. The kids who were less physically mature than their peers who the compeat with attention for. They are loners and feel as if they are rejected by society. Before these loners lash out they show warning signs or make threats. Sometimes even they are goaded or bullied by their peers. 1 out of 4 children and teens has a mental issue at some point but less than 25 percent of the mental issues are ever treated Price 1-2). When there is a horrible instance like a shooting where a large number of people are killed their is a large amount of national attention where the government looks into how to treat these issues and possibly prevent future ones but shortly after the emotion and attention goes away so does the actions to prevent such events from taking place (Price 2). Kids now instead of solving their problems by duking it out in the backyard they are turning to more violent measures. Some of these measures are knives baseball bats boots and sometimes even guns. Instead of worrying so much about guns and how to ban them why does the government not spend more time supporting a mandatory enforced daily …show more content…
Shooters are weak people who when they are planning their attack target areas that are going to guarantee them the least amount of resistance. A college campus a school and even major work areas are “gun free zones”. This means that no one on the campus is allowed to have a gun there even with the proper documents allowing for a concealed carry or even an open carry once you are over the age of 21. In the case of the Virginia Tech shooting the previous year the school defeated the bill allowing lawful concealed carry on campus. With the passing of this bill it allowed for no one to be able to resist an armed attack with nothing but staplers and laptops. Once the Virginia Tech killer was on campus and began firing he killed 32 people, wounded 15 in nine minutes and still missed 73 percent of his shots and had 200 rounds remaining. Suddenly he realized that armed officers were approaching he turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Now what would have happened if once the shooter walked on campus and was met with one to two students that were concealed carrying. It would have saved many lives and if the school had passed the bill allowing students and professors to conceal carry it could have deterred the attack all together. Gun free zones appeal to only two groups of people: the utopian minded anti gun crowd and the killers with guns (Burnett 1-2). Many people think that guns on a
Due to the fact that many pro-gun arguments argue false ideas of correlation is causation, forget to mention the lack of training in average individuals, and basic human error; arguments against concealed carry hold greater momentum. There are numerous arguments as to why or why not faculty and students should be able to carry concealed weapons; the greatest arguments deal with correlation vs. causation. In Jordan LaPorta article " In Defense of Self-Defense: Why Campus Carry Is a Good Idea”, LaPorta states that many of the locations that gun violence took place were “gun free zone”. LaPorta states in the article, “One could attribute the occurrence to simple irony if violence in ‘gun-free zones’ was uncommon.”
Students and teachers would teach and learn the same until the time arose for a handgun to be drawn , that is if an active shooter entered
(Smith, T.N. 2012) The students and staff while on campus who are protecting themselves or another should not be subject to arrest or be punished for a crime. Students need to properly educate the public on the benefits of carrying guns on the campus. By states not allowing guns on campus it is making a target for the shootings. Research says there are more rapes, assaults, and robberies than killings.
Mass shootings have been a major issue in this country. One common place these shootings take place is on school grounds. These events keep happening with really no solution to put an end to these tragedies. Recently, a bill had been proposed in Wisconsin that would lift the ban on guns in campus buildings in UW schools. This means more guns on campus.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. Many citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would reduce the threat of crime. People have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting and recreational activity. With the recent events involving firearms and mass shootings, people are skeptical whether to increase or decrease gun laws. Americans have a constitutional right to own handguns and stricter laws and licensing will not effectively save lives.
I feel that the people ever allowed to bring guns onto school grounds are law enforcement. Many people, such as myself, would not feel safe being in a school environment being around people with guns on their hip. We come to school to learn and to hopefully feel safe, but having tons of people with guns on them would not make me feel safe whatsoever. Yes, if there ever was a school shooting on campus, it could help bring the victim level down if there is someone in the area of the shooter. School shootings are pretty rare even though they have been more frequent recently.
The debate over gun control has caused a great amount of attention from the media in the past five years. When Adam Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., before taking his own life in one of the nation 's most horrific mass shootings. There have been marches and protests, Super Bowl advertisements, emotional and contentious congressional and state hearings and a new, tough gun-control law. This year alone there has been over 11,000 deaths related to gun violence. Along with those deaths there has been a combined 20,000 injuries.
Gun control came into play because guns were becoming a problem in America when in reality it is the people pulling the trigger that are. The laws of gun control are reasonable, but the reason to have more is ridiculous. For example, fewer suicides, police can handle everything, and America becomes a safe place. Even when these reasons are backed up with examples, they still are idiotic. One that got my irritation was for a reason on the internet to be, “gun control will lead to fewer suicides.
Guns are a Necessity for Safety “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” commented Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s chief executive officer (Resmovits 1). In the recent years there have been more and more school shootings and parents, teachers, and officials say it is about time we upgrade the security in in a classroom by arming teachers. Teachers are the first line of defense and the protectors of their students. Teachers are in the first line of fire giving them guns would give them another option of safety.
The first modern school shooting in the United States was on august 1, 1996 at the University of Austin. Austin police were seriously outgunned but were quickly helped when several students and civilians ran to their own vehicles to bring back their hunting rifles. They stood along with the officers and shot at the intruder and later killed him. Without the help of the students and civilians the police would not have been able to stop the shooter quickly enough and he would have killed more than 12 people. Rampage killers like the one that shot at the University of
For this reason, security professionals believe that arming students shoot back would actually make matters worse in the extremely rare instances where mass shootings occur on campus.” This can create a bigger problem than the one before. Such accidental shootings are not accountable for which leaves families of innocent victims upset and frustrated because justice is never served. According to The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus “Despite the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois, college campuses are far safer than the communities that surround them. Ninety three percent of the violence against college students occurs off campus, where guns are widely available.
Gun control argument is one of the argument that is discussed right now. From 1776, when this nation was founded, American people have been using the guns for many reasons such as hunting, self-defence, and killing. At this time American people are facing both danger and advantage of guns. Not only governors , but also all American people have to deal with this problem for their
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
Gun control has been a topic of debate since 1837 and has been since. The most popular argument pro gun enthusiasts make is that it 's simply the second amendment and has no business being changed. But there have been 17 amendments since the original ten so adding another would not be unheard of. Also they were written in a time where, “the average gun could maybe fire twice in one minute and the odds of hitting a target 100 yards away was 1/3”. (MilitaryHaritage.com).
This might be true but the potential shooter could also feel confident that he can cause more damage with concealed carry holders present. Policemen responding to the situation would have a hard time identifying the shooter if there is more than one person with a gun and students would also not be able to identify the shooter easily. Concealed gun carriers would just make the situation more tense and
