Conservative gun-rights advocates should acknowledge that if more states had a stringent universal background check, or if a federal law put these in place, more guns would be kept out of the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable (Goldberg). In the article, “The Impact of Violence on Children,” Joy Osofsky elaborates that gun violence in communities are extremely detrimental in communities especially for children. Osofsky, a professor of public health in Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, uses masses of children psychology, scenarios and experiences to demonstrate the importance of gun control and to increase gun regulations. She focuses on children’s response to guns and violence, showing that the exposure of gun violence to children at their early ages not only increases their interest to use guns, but also the likelihood to use it to resolve conflicts or when a problem arises. As this continues, children can also experience stress, thus struggling to regulate their emotions and their experiences of the occurrence of many gun violence. These exposures will manifest in the child’s growth and he or she will end up being a more aggressive and violent individual later on.

For the past 232 years, Americans have had the right to defend themselves against crime, tyranny, and victimization through the rights given to us by our founding fathers. If these rights were restricted or even taken away from Americans, the crime rate would soar, and the safety of the people and families of America would be put in jeopardy. If these rights were restricted, the generations to come would be brought into an environment of violence and crime. (Purpose Statement) While many think that gun control can fix the rate of gun homicides and crimes and mass shootings, it will most likely have the opposite effect and will restrict our right to defend ourselves.

Gun violence is a constant problem in the United States of America. It has affected society and out youth negatively in the past and will continue to affect the country as a whole if nothing is done about it. The country is in mourning due to the recent influx of gun violence related crimes. There are common-sense reforms that either side can agree on. These include improvements to backgrounds checks, revisions of the Second Amendment that accommodate the modern innovations to firearms and reinstating the Center for Disease Control's research on gun violence.

In the same year, data collected by the FBI show that firearms were used in 68 percent of murders, 41 percent of robbery offenses and 21 percent of aggravated assaults nationwide.” (NIJ). Most homicides are committed with firearms and the numbers continue to increase.

Since the Second Amendments’ ratification in 1791, Americans still debate with one another, because of its many controversy views. The amendment allows every citizen of the United States the right to own guns and to defend themselves when in danger. The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.

There is an estimation that about half of the households in the United States owns at least one gun. As such many people can have access to guns, including children and other family members. Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
