How Did Meriwether Lewis Commit Suicide

•“She was not even listening. She had gotten tired of listening. She knew, as we all knew, what the outcome would be. A white man had been killed during a robbery, and thought two of the robbers had been killed on the spot, one had been captured, and he, too, would have to die” (4). This quote is important because it allows me to understand that Jefferson has to die because he was the only person in the liquor store and was a black man.

How did Meriwether Lewis die William Clark and Meriwether Lewis were two revolutionary American explorers who had a big part in purchasing and exploring the Louisiana territory. Lewis was closely acquainted with President Jefferson and Jefferson is the one who went through with the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis was travelling to DC to collect his debt and sell his important papers and documents. On October 11, 1809 Meriwether Lewis was found dead at grinders stand inn with two gunshot wounds in his body, one in his stomach and one in the back of his head. In the following essay I am going to first of all explain what J S Mill means by the statement on mankind’s way of living. Thomas Jefferson’s Instructions to Meriwether Lewis discussed the appointment of Lewis as commander of the expedition, gave specific details of the purpose of the exploration, and provided directions for Lewis to follow when carrying out the trip. Thomas Jefferson carefully selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to be the commander of the Expedition and trusted that he would be able to perform the tasks assigned to him. Jefferson requested that an abundant amount of precise notes be taken and that they be protected at all costs. He was interested in learning about the people occupying the land, their culture, the ecosystems, and the land. How did Meriwether Lewis Die? Meriwether Lewis was an army officer who was told by Thomas Jefferson to lead the journey of traveling through the new Louisiana territory with William Clark. When he came back from the journey he was rewarded with the role as governor of the Louisiana territory. Close to the day of his death he traveled to Washington D.C. because he was hoping to resolve issues about the denied payment drafts which he made against the war department while he was serving as the governor which was leaving him in debt.

The question is: why would Lewis’ close friends, Jefferson, assassinate him? What was his motive? As reported by Chandler, the victim – Meriwether Lewis – was suspected to have found hidden secrets about General Wilkinson (who was his predecessor) that would have ultimately ruined not only his but President Jefferson’s reputation all together. The author believes that the reason why Lewis decided to travel all the way to Washington was to “blow the whistle.” In order to stop the shocking series of events to happen, President Jefferson had to stop him or “get rid” of him before the scandal would spread all over the country.

In Ernest Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying, the author uses a third person point of view to assess the issue of racial injustice in the South during the 1940’s. Grant understands that justice is evaluated unfairly and knows that it does not favor the poor and uneducated black man. Due to Grant’s ability to be able to understand others, he successfully learns how to bring justice, while assisting Jefferson. This presents the audience the significance of the novel as a whole, embracing responsibility and facing injustice. Grant feels as if he shouldn’t feel obligated or pressured to help bring justice to Jefferson.
