Hypothesis Treating ADHD

ADHD is very common and the symptoms our patient, Kevin, is experiencing are in line with the symptoms used to diagnose it. More specifically, Kevin’s symptoms are matching the combined classification of ADHD. As a general diagnosis, ADHD is a very common disorder, and can be classified into three types- Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, and Combined. Inattentive ADHD is the type where the patient is easily distracted, a common stereotype (albeit true) of ADHD patients. This type is generally associated with lack of attention to detail, careless mistakes, failure to keep on task (being easily distracted), and being forgetful.

“Everyone wants to have friends, but making friends is hard for kids with ADHD” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 73). Once Blake makes a friend, he feels like he achieved something great, as any child would. “Having one friend was an accomplishment for an ADHD kid like me” (Taylor, Blake E. S., 67). At first, Aki, Blake’s best friend when he was 10 years old, does not care that Blake has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

I believe that my ADHD creates challenges in my job such as getting off track, not always finishing everything assigned to me, and the tendency to talk with my coworkers instead of doing my job. Despite the challenges I face in the work environment, I have to give myself reminders on what I am supposed to be doing and try to make more of an effort to get my job done. In addition to the obstacles I face in the work environment, ADHD provides additional obstacles in the relationships that I have with my family and friends. I do not share the fact that I have ADHD with my friends and that I need to take medicine just to feel and operate normal, so I occasionally feel alone or bad about my schoolwork knowing that I have to work harder for the grades I receive. Similarly, issues arise within my family because my parents have the tendency to get upset when I forget to finish my chores, or my desk is a mess and unorganized.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, more well-known as ADHD, is a disorder that affects 9% of children in the U.S. When left untreated, ADHD can lead the sufferer to be unable to cope in school or socially and possibly leads to depression. ADHD is a hyperactivity disorder with many symptoms that can be treated through therapy, emotional counselling, and use of medications. II. There is a plethora of symptoms when it comes to ADHD. A. Symptoms are separated into two categories, one is inattentiveness and the other is hyperactivity 1.

Sitting in class looking everywhere and hearing everything, but you sit there wondering, “What’s wrong with me?” All the other children are sitting still looking straight. The feeling of being abnormal because being different is wrong. No parent wants this for their child, logically the parents think it’s the right decision to medicate their child. Children should not be allowed to take prescribed medications due to how it impacts their mental state, body, and relationships with others.

There 's plenty of drugs the world may think is fine to use only because it 's given to you by a doctor. All prescribed drugs are made to help someone in some kind of way; some drugs are being issued without having the focus on how it can affect the patient in a harmful way. In most cases, these drugs are free based on the patient health insurance, which may cause some to take advantage of the treatments. In that case, both the doctor and patient should be aware of the uses, abuses and side effects of these drugs such as Adderall. Adderall is a commonly prescribed drug that is known for treating mostly kids.

According to the 2013 National College Health Assessment study, almost half of students surveyed stated they felt overwhelmed with anxiety in the last year (Novotney, 2014). These numbers continue to rise among high school students and college students around the country. It’s no question why the percentage of Adderall use among college students is also rising. Adderall is a drug commonly prescribed to treat ADHD and its symptoms; however, its use among students without the ailment is rising. The drug heightens students’ motivation, focus, and concentration (Student Health, 2016).

The lack of knowledge concerning the effects Adderall has on one’s health and the misuse of the drug has led many students to believe that there are no negative side effects of the drug. The negative effects of Adderall on the human body outweigh the positive effects that are better known by college students. Ninety-five percent of the articles in media reports “mentioned at least one possible benefit of using prescription drugs for neuro-enhancement, but only fifty-eight percent mentioned any risks or side effects” (Lakhan). Since the negative effects of Adderall are not talked about much by the media not many college students are aware of what they are taking and what could happen. I have been faced with many challenges with ADHD. It affects every aspect of my life including my behavior, my mood and most of all my cognitive and organizational skills. My late diagnosis made it difficult to accept and understand what was happening. First I was diagnosed with defiant child syndrome because I was not respecting my teachers at school, fighting and just being disrespectful.

The specified medication involved in treating the disorder involves the application of ADHD stimulants meaning that if the drug is taken as prescribed by the medical doctor, the behavior and attention insignificance will be reduced remarkably. Research indicates that students using the drug as a stimulant shows a positive increase in performance and cognitive skills (Vester, Brady and Galanter 78). Additionally, college students abusing the drug through using it as a stimulant state believe that the drug revives the body and the brain hence increase the ability to focus academically.

The three mental ailments associated with ADHD are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Living with these conditions is no easy task. Anyone of those symptoms can individually lead to not having good grades, or even losing track of a simple conversation. Put all of them together and you have a dangerous mix that in undoubtably going to lead to poor school performance and an inept social life, if the proper means are not taken. Therefore, the effectiveness outweighs the risk when it comes to this medication, which in turn makes ADHD medication a promising and efficient treatment for children with attention deficit hyperactivity

Children with ADHD Attention Psychiatric Association says that up to 11% of children in the U.S have been diagnosed with ADHD. This is a concerning percentage considering the possibility for misdiagnosis. Many children have been misdiagnosed with ADHD due to parents being overwhelmed by their high energy children, Schools not questioning a misdiagnosis because they get more funding for a child with a mental handicap, and because doctors choose the easy way out when treating a child with high energy. The first reason why children are being misdiagnosed for ADHD because parents are being overwhelmed by their high energy children.

According to our book behavior modification is a treatment approach which is focused on changing people’s (and animal’s) behavior through a systematic program based on the learning principles of classical conditioning, operant conditioning, or observational learning. I believe that Behavior Modification should be used in society to shape the behavior of others, since it can help those with psychological needs to look after themselves and rely less on others for basic needs. And since, behavior modification is used to treat different mental disorders such as ADHD, enuresis, and OSD and many others, it can help not only people with mental disorders but also with their families deal with these people in order to improve their home environment.
