Thinking back to elementary school, was there one kid who could never sit still or could not pay attention? Did this kid drive everyone crazy? Or was this kid struggling with ADHD or ADD? Every kid has trouble sitting for long but when they get up so much it is very disruptive and distracting to everyone. Someone who is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder struggles to concentrate, acting impulsively without much thought, and has difficulties listening and spends a great deal of their day daydreaming. There are different ways to treat ADHD without medication. Clinician and doctors use cognitive behavioral theory or behavioral treatment where appropriate behaviors can be reinforced. Researchers are investigating the role of working memory training in children with ADHD. It states that medication is currently the most effective treatment but the long-term safety and how treatment should continue is little known. An alternative to medication has been focusing in on the behavior by training the cognitive working memory (van Dongen-Boomsma, 2014). It is also important to question the children to really understand how ADHD affects their daily lives. The researchers asked about their physical and emotional health within the diagnosis. Many children were interviewed about their experiences with ADHD. The article really focuses in on the children and not just the parents and doctors of the children (Brady, 2014). The best way to help the children was to use therapy to correct behavior and to provide training and assistance to parents. Richard Reading reviewed an article that applied to ADHD. In that article, the researcher had a questionnaire regarding ADHD medication for practitioners and clinicians. The review also explains some side effects of ADHD medication and how to manage them, if considering medication the side effects need to be taken seriously (Reading, 2013). The most common way to treat it is to use medication to help children calm down and to be able to focus. Medication does have its benefits but it does have side effects as well. One study found that the different subtypes of ADHD last different rates and affect others differently. Medicine has different affects on each person and it may or may not be the best way to treat the subtype. They had two groups of children; one group had ADHD (n=45) the other did not (n=30) and they compared IQ scores. The research was proven to be significant (p<0.01) that there was not much difference between the IQ scores of the groups (Ahmadi et al., 2014). Another article goes in depth to explain ADHD in children, adolescents, and adults. It explains the criteria in DSM-5 and changes made and the treatments for clinical practice. It states that clinical diagnosis is best to determine what subtype is present and what medication is best. The results found that 50% recalled onset by age seven and 95% reported onset at age 12 (Dalsgaard, 2013). For years now ADHD has been the most commonly diagnosed disorder for children. This article goes in depth about the benefits and some of the side effects of different medications used to help manage this disorder. First, they differentiated between stimulant medications and antidepressant medications. The article explained stimulants are more commonly used. They listed 13 different
