Mary Anne Warren is a well-known American philosopher who has influenced the argument of the controversial issue, abortion. Today, I will be supporting Warren’s belief and theory on abortion solely being the woman’s choice and will do so by refuting other theories and philosophers including; John T Noonan, Judith Thompson, and Don Marquis. John T. Noonan revolves his argument of abortion around the idea of conception. According to Noonan, abortion is morally wrong because a being comes into existence at the point of conception. Also, being conceived by human parents automatically classifies the fetus as a human as well. The doctors later explain to the victim that he had been kidnapped during his sleep in order to save a famous violinists life. The violinist suffers from a rare kidney disease and the individuals’ kidney is needed for nine months to save his life. This leaves the victim with the choice of disconnecting the tubes and essentially killing the violinist, or remaining in bed connected to the tubes for nine months in order to save his life. The victim relates to the mother, demonstrating her confusion and resentment towards the violinist, which corresponds to the fetus. The kidnapping demonstrates how the mother feels as if her body was stolen while the famous violinists allows others to see potentiality and value in the fetus. Although Warren and Thomson have slightly similar views regarding the mother’s choice to abort, Warren still views Thomson’s theory as flawed. According to Warren, the right to one’s body can be compared to a property right. Thus, meaning the only person that has control over your body is yourself. A man is unable to experience pregnancy, which is a reason I believe they should have no say in the matter of abortion. Not only is it important for women to dictate their own bodies, but it is important to ensure comfort when women are dealing with abortions. Unfortunately, millions of women die each year due to illegal abortions. When women feel trapped, they are forced to find their own solutions which some, have proved to be deathly. Warren’s theory opens abortion as a subject that is meant to help and not harm. The issue of abortion creates questions such as whether or not abortion is morally justifiable, rights of a fetus, and explores the criteria necessary to be proven as a person. When it comes to abortion, a lot can be said. More specifically, author and philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson takes her own stand on abortion, saying it is morally permissible to get abortions. Morally, I disagree with her stance on this. The reason I think this way is because I feel that there were other options open to us, than the main one being abortion. These other options, I feel are better and have better outcomes for the child than abortion.
Charlotte Taft once said “Women who have abortions do so because they value life and because they take very seriously the responsibilities that come not just with birth, but with nurturing a human being”. The Editorial Board at The New York Times believes in this statement as well. The Editorial Board published an editorial on June 27, 2016 titled “A major Victory for Abortion Rights”. The article published, is about a change in Texas 's anti-abortion law and is intended for woman who can or will bear children. The editorial was created to persuade these women that if another woman who is pregnant and cannot keep the unborn child or does not want to keep the child, that these women should have the right to abort the embryo or fetus legally.
If life was not started at conception in these cases and scientifically the unborn child could not be having any thoughts or actions running through the brain the argument would be stronger to persuade the anti-abortion side. Personally, taking away an unborn living thinking fetus’s rights just because we cannot hear them or see them physically does not seem justified. In case eight I do not see how women can just say “well it is nice of me to share my body so I will or I will not because I don’t have to,” when they have a person breathing and thinking inside of them that could be the next inventor or great doctor of the world. With this burglary example the person having their house broken into purchased the best bars money can buy but the burglar still gets in through a defect in the bars. Similar to a defect in birth control, rare but still happens, is how the author gets her point across to show just how unjust this treatment is to any individual having an unfortunate event like this becoming a moral responsibility. Then the author stretches the hypothetical situation even more by introducing an example where people seeds exist and one can fly into ones house at anytime taking root in their carpet. This is similar to the burglary example except now that person would have to care for the child after no action of theirs caused this unfortunate event. Abortion is not only a fluctuating concept in our society, but an ethical and emotional debate, as well. The image I have chosen presents concepts from a cultural and historical background, as well as presents an ethical, emotional, and logical appeal to the audience. The debate about abortion has simply been overblown and exhausted. The truth of the matter is, abortion is murder. Ending a life, whether innocent or guilty, is murder.
Before Roe v. wade the number of deaths from illegal abortions was around 5000 and in the 50s and 60s the number of illegal abortions ranged from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. These illegal abortions pose major health risks to the life of the woman including damage to the bladder, intestines as well as rupturing of the uterus. The choice to become a mother must be given to the woman most importantly because it’s her body, her health, and she will be taking on a great responsibility. A woman’s choice to choose abortion should not be restricted by anyone; there are multiple reasons why abortion will be the more sensible decision for the female.

Patrick Lee and Robert George assert that abortion is objectively immoral. One of Lee and George’s main reason for coming to this conclusion is that human embryos are living human beings. This essentially validates that abortion is indeed the process of killing a human. Another main point said by the two is a rebuttal to a common argument used in favor of abortion, which states that a potential mother has full parental responsibilities only if she has voluntarily assumed them. The rebuttal to this was that the potential mother does indeed have special responsibilities to raise the child.
This same way of thinking means that a fetus has no choice or ability to make decision when it comes to whose womb they inhabit as a result of failed contraception. Again, I am not arguing that abortion would not be morally permissible in the case of failed contraception but I am saying that there are key differences in intent and rational capacities between a malicious burglar and an unknowing fetus that weaken this analogy. Thomson also says that a burglar who breaks in should not have a right to stay in your house. While this is true, there are very few cases where a burglar will stay in your house if there intent is to steal something and get away. Staying in the house would be irrational if they want to get away with the crime.
The children that have been victims of abortion however, never got the chance to do the things Tom Robinson did. Due to their Parents own wants “According to the Guttmacher Institute, an estimated fifty-six million induced abortions were performed worldwide from 2010 to 2014”, which is millions of lives that could have made a difference in the world, now gone because their parents believed they either made a mistake, or do not want to go through the discomfort of pregnancy(“Abortion”). The argument “My body, my choice” is one that is made regularly on the “Pro-Choice” side of the abortion argument. The truth is, it really is not just their body, it is also the body of another person that has the potential to make a great life. The life of another person truly does not matter to these people.
In “A Defense of Abortion,” Judith Thomson argues with a unique approach regarding the topic of abortion. For the purpose of the argument, Thomas agrees to go against her belief and constructs an argument based on the idea that the fetus is a person at conception. She then formulates her arguments concerning that the right to life is not an absolute right. There are certain situations where abortion is morally permissible. She believes that the fetus’s right to life does not outweigh the right for the woman to control what happens to her own body.
