New England Colony Vs Middle Colonies

The Middle Colonies are located in between the New England and Southern Colonies. The Middle Colonies consist of New York founded in 1624, Delaware in 1638, Pennsylvania in 1643, and New Jersey in 1660. These four colonies were different, economically and socially, in many ways because they got a mix of the other two colonies and made it their own. New York was founded the British acquired more land from the Dutch. New York was called New Netherlands and was ruled by the Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant before the British took it over.

Southern, Middle, and New Egeland colonies had lots of differences in society and economic ways. For example, in the Southern Colonies they would grow rice and tobacco sugar cane, and indigo. There are a lot of differences and similarities between the Southern and Middle colonies. One similarity is the diversity of people they both had immigrants Southern had scottish, irish, and german. Middle had other kinds of immigrants.

The thirteen colonies, which were divided into 3 regions, were all different and unique in many ways. However, the diversity among the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies is perhaps what made them so distinctive. The differences between these three regions affected the way they lived, but later, they gained knowledge by analyzing their mistakes and differences. Although these three regions only had a few things in common, it was the differences among them that helped them grow and learn from one another.

Although all the colonists all came from England, the community development, purpose, and societal make-up caused a distinct difference between two distinct societies in New England and the Chesapeake region. The distinctions were obvious, whether it be the volume of religious drive, the need or lack of community, families versus single settlers, the decision on minimal wage, whether or not articles of agreements were drawn for and titles as well as other social matters were drawn, as well as where loyalties lay in leaders. New England was, overall, more religious than the Chesapeake region. Settlers in New England were searching relief for religious persecution in Europe. Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics were coming in droves to America searching for an opportunity to have religious freedom.

Each colonial region was distinct in its own way. That is largely because of the pattern of colonization that occurred from 1607 to the early 1700 's. But if you really break it down, societies in the colonies were separated either economically or religiously. New England societies were primarily founded on religious views which created covenant communities originally based off of the Mayflower Compact. The people of New England colonies (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire) saw no real difference between separation of church and state.

New England Colony: How it Divided North and South Great Britain already had established themselves in Virginia and started to expand up north and south (until they reached Spanish Florida). New England was different from any other colony within the New World. The colony was respectful of peoples’ religions from Catholics to Protestants. Women in New England had more rights—right to own property, right to own money, i.e—than in any European country and especially the southern colonies. The religious tolerance and gaining women some of the rights were important to the early developments of the North vs. the South.

New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.

The southern colony and New England Colony had many differences. The New England colony was based more in manufacturing while the southern colony was about agriculture as far as their economy. One big difference is that New England colony didn’t believe in slavery like the southern colonies believed. Slaves and indentured servants were the backbone of the Southern economy. They did much of the labor work for the southern colonies cash crops.

The Middle Colonies was the “melting pot” of the nation. There were many different religions and nationalities. Most of this area was educated by religious groups and established their own schools based on religion. Learning through an apprenticeship was very common in this area as well.

The British colonies in the Chesapeake region and those of the New England region were both similar yet different in certain ways. One because both the colonist that settled there were looking for new opportunities. However, it was mostly second son aristocrats, which means the first born usually inherits the better half of the father’s riches. Their lives in England had either been mistreated or they were unable to flourish economically. Regardless of whether they were searching the land for expansive homesteads, religious freedom, or exchanging and merchant opportunities, the colonist in both regions were searching for another land in the New World.

There were long growing seasons. Also, the Southern Colonies had long plains, some hilly regions, long rivers, and low, flat farmland. Like the Southern and Middle Colonies, the New England Colonies had some hills, but that is the only similarity of climate and geography between all of these Colonies. However, they both eventually established their own cultures that were different from each other. The colonies’ differing beliefs, environments, and labor lead to the contrasting cultures. The New England Colonies were a Puritanical society, who preached against excess.

The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.
