Personal Narrative: My Journey To New Jersey

This quiet and quaint town known as Mt. Holly, NJ is where I grew up. Nestled in the outskirts of New Jersey’s capitol, is known for its small town charm and historic roots. Living here was the best years of my life. I grew up in a part of town that once housed the military families from Ft. Dix and McGuire Air Force Base, which is now known as Joint Base.

This experience furthered my understanding of self and personal life-purpose. From my experience, volunteer work is a vehicle to explore how we can work together in pursuit of a common vision, using the unique resources we can offer, such as: creativity, time and leadership. As a graduate student, I worked for Gibbels Public Affairs in Brussels, which furthered my understanding of international affairs and development. This year, I worked in face-to-face fundraising for Children International.

School and being involved in the community is something I feel like everyone needs. These two things help people to become more open to bigger opportunities. I feel as if you should start young in community activities, such as girl scouts or being involved with soup kitchens. School is not well-liked by everyone, but it is something that everyone should have on their record. People who do not complete high school should at least try to accomplish their GED.

The “hood” is often what downtown, Elizabeth NJ is labeled as. Children like me are doubted as many people seem to believe we will just become another statistic. My background has motivated to strive for success, proving those with agnosticism wrong. Seeing bodies strung out on the corner or laying on the sidewalk is a part of my everyday life. I’m not ashamed of where I come from as it has made me who I am today.

It all started with the fourteen hour drive there. Sleeping, listening to music, and blocking out the complaining of my brothers. “Mommm, Carissa’s foot is touching me!” This was all I heard the whole ride there. I continue to turn up my music as loud as it will go and force my eyes shut.

Being involved with BuildOn, which is an organization that lets teens reach out to their community through the act of volunteering, gave me exposure to homeless shelters, food pantries, tutoring centers, and taught me the importance of helping others. The act of volunteering gave me the opportunity to talk to others and change my point of view. It has shown me that not everyone has the same opportunities to succeed in life, and that is why a small act of kindness can always have an impact, whether it is small or large. Participating in

Community service is not only about receiving hours to put on a resume, but it is something you do to guide others and make them feel better. An example of this was when I was part of the MLK day of service at Stockton University two years in a row where I sewed pillows and pins to support the unfortunate; this was a great experience where I was able to make new friends and contribute to the society. Service is not only about being part of large organizations, but it is also about doing small deeds for others, like staying after school and contributing to the club even if it is not mandatory. I also was part of Project Green where I picked up garbage on the beach and planted marram grass.

Road trip to Maryland was totally awesome except for when I hurt my shoulder. It started out as a usual beautiful day in Ocean City, Maryland. Our hotel was so cool, it had a ice skating ring in the center. We also had a beach view, which was beautiful. We spent half the indoor pool and then we went to get lunch.

On December, my friend calls me to go with her to Boston. At that time, I don’t want to go because it was very cold. Also she doesn’t had friend to go with her. She said it will be fun when we get there. We will be going to see a lot of beautiful place and take picture.

The First Time I Moved We were sitting at the dinner table, my mom and dad said we need to talk. It scared me, because when they say that it usually means something bad had happened. They said “in a month we are moving to Kansas.” It saddened my sister and myself.

Volunteering is very important; it is both vital to the people receiving aid as it satisfies their needs, and it is important to those administering aid as it gives them joy and helps them become better people. The reason I volunteered for St. Margaret 's Fair was so I could finally stop sitting around and get to work. When I saw the opportunity to do something important, I grasped at it; I selected the ring toss game was because I felt it would be fun and important. I do believe my job at the St. Margaret 's Fair was very important as it both collected money for those in need and, at the same time, instilled me with a love of volunteering. The purpose of the fair was to collect money for humanitarian efforts in the local area.

If a person were to feel unimportant, volunteering has a way of making them feel like an important role in society. For all ages, volunteering can benefit each age group. To adolescents, it can keep them out of trouble and teach them life lessons. For adults, it can improve their self-worth and overall happiness in life.

The effects of volunteering can range from many helpful characteristics. From helping those in need, giving back to the community, working for worthwhile causes, and overall helping someone with their health, mentally and physically.
