Alfie Kohn is an American author and speaker who focuses on human behavior. In his book Punished by Rewards, Kohn makes the statement, “If children feel safe, they can take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, learn to trust, share their feelings, and grow.” This statements legitimacy and truth may address many concerns, one being the debated topic on whether or not teachers should have access to weapons in a school building. Once the pros and cons are weighed out, letting schools have armed teachers in the building provides safety, creates a better, safer learning environment and helps form a bond of trust between students and their teacher. Having armed teachers provides security for both the students and other staff in the building. In our country, whenever the unfortunate events of a school shooting happen, many debatable topics are brought to attention; many of them on gun laws. …show more content…
The world we live in today can be very confusing. It seems like everyone is debating and arguing and can’t come to an agreement about anything. But, one thing we should all agree on is the importance of safety in our Public Education Systems. Besides that, having armed teachers also creates an overall better learning environment. High school students can hardly focus just from the anxiety about a test. Imagine the fear and nerves that are felt after a tragic story of a shooting being broadcast all over the television. It would be very intense and hard to work under such conditions. Knowing that there is something in the room that can save your life and protect you will help ease those
Positives for arming teachers include: -Protecting against an intruder -Being first on the scene in the event of an intruder -Being an inexpensive option compared to hiring professional security -Always being present in the classroom unlike
“Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun” by Steve Siebold delivers the message about why teachers should be armed with guns. Primarily he thinks that shooters will be less motivated to try to attack a school that is able to defend itself against the gunman. He also goes on to say that “Every second counts in a school shooting. Calling 911 and waiting for police to arrive isn’t good enough.” He gives us the idea that we need to take action against these shooters and potentially end school shootings once and for all.
Arming Teachers Is Not The Solution To Stop School Shootings It’s only been about 12 weeks in 2018 and there have been 17 school shootings where students and teachers were killed or injured. This basically means that there’s a shooting every week. Of shootings perpetrated by minors at primary and secondary schools and for which the source of the firearm was known, more than half of the kids obtained the gun at home likely because an adult did not store it locked and unloaded. In all, these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non-fatal gunshot injuries. Because of all these school shootings, there have been people saying that teachers should protect their students, but in teachers’ contract, they didn’t sign up to do that.
Gun Control keep School Safe The 21st century has brought out a lot of violence not only in the communities in general but it also puts the lives of students in school in danger. Individuals should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon if they choose to in order to be able to feel safe weather the person is a teacher or a student. The right to carry Teachers in todays society should have the right to obtain permit and carry a weapon to school if they choose to.
Teachers should not be armed in schools because the could not handle a real situation, and the liability is too much of a risk. To elaborate, it is widely agreed that a student’s well-being is a teacher’s concern. For six to eight hours every day for 5 days a week, the life of the student is in the teacher’s hands. However, a teacher has never been expected to arm themself to protect a student until now.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
There is a possibility that a kid who is planning a shooting could just be in a classroom and find out were his/her teacher keeps the weapon, and they wouldn 't even have to sneak a gun in. That’s a downside but what if we made gun safes that only opened with a teachers ID or own password making it almost impossible for a student to open it. Conclusion By arming teachers there are alot more positives than negatives, Yes bad things can happen with a deadly weapon in a classroom but people will continue to do these horrific crimes knowing there is hardly anything that’s going to stop them.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
There are those who add to America’s gun problem, and there are those who help solve the problem. Our country has many personal weapons in public circulation, this proves to be deadly. The prospect of arming educators has been widely suggested this year after many school shootings. Arming teachers will only add to America’s gun problem.
We negate the resolution that teachers should be armed due to the waste of money, time, and safety. We would like to present the following definitions: Armed is defined by merriam-webster to be furnished with weapons Weapon is defined by merriam-webster to be something used to injure, defeat, or destroy. We believe this resolution is asking us to advocate to negate and our opponents to advocate to affirm.
Recently in asu, there was a threat of armed students, as a student at the school I am very panic. I think this is a very serious issue for all teachers and students. No government law allows or disallows weapons on the grounds. Twenty-six states boycott the practice, with an
Would it really make a difference other than less death in shootings? As long as the teacher provides information that they have had proper training, everything should be fine. If you have the proper training, then you know there is no way that someone with training would ever be stupid enough to leave a gun somewhere that might endanger children. I think that teacher should have fire arms because in a lockdown drill and someone broke in there would be no way of protection if teacher had no firearm and the attacker did have a firearm. Also if 911 is called that would take way too long and by the time the cops get there most of the students would be dead or would be bleeding out to the
Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Following this attack, numerous solutions have been argued and purposed.
Teachers did not go into their profession to be babysitters, and they certainly didn 't go into it to be security guards. Now society is trying to force them to be both. How anyone could possibly secure those weapons so that students could never obtain them would be a nightmare- and unrealistic? And to think that if a school full of teenagers can access a weapon in every classroom that violence would decrease is absurd. There are many negatives to teachers owning guns such as: cost of training and weapons, teachers turning against their students, and keeping teacher who has the gun a secret.
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
