The gun ownership was legalized in United States in 1787, but crimes committed by the people who have guns still endanger the life or property safety of innocent citizens now. According to Follman’s study,“ since 1982 there have been at least 61 mass murders carried out with firearms across the United States, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii” (Follman 119). It shows that many criminals have guns and many people are under the fear state of being killed. As a result, it made the topic whether the government should control guns more strictly more controversial. The suicide rate in America is not as high as other countries. According to the Jacobs’ study, the suicide rate for America in 1996 is 11.6 and for Japan is 16.7 and for France is 20.8 (Jacobs). Adversely, this is just the comparison between America and other countries. Because the guns are illegal in Japan and France so we couldn’t know what will happen when the guns are legal in the two countries. When focusing on the America, as discussed before, the suicide rate related to guns indeed increased faster than the suicide related to other methods. What the essay focuses on is the gun control in the United States, the longitudinal comparison of data is more reliable. In spite of the suicide rate of the United States is not the highest, the stricter gun control also could work and reduce the suicide rate. There have been some more reliable data could show that the gun ownership is likely to increase suicide rate. This essay shows three aspects about thinking this controversial problem more rational. First and foremost, making the control over guns stricter could save many people’s lives through preventing parts of the suicides. Secondly, making the control over guns stricter may protect citizens’ lives by keeping them away from violence and some crimes. Last but not least, making the control over guns stricter might protect people from the risk of traumatic stress disorder. Adversely, there are some opposing views. The strongest one is that guns should be used for self-defense in order to protect the self-defense right of citizens. However, controlling guns stricter does not against the right of citizens for defending themselves because the way of self-defense could be variable. Self-defense could not always rely on guns. More importantly, making the control over the guns stricter could make many citizens obtain the senses of security .
