Allusions play a very important role in enhancing the meaning in the poem The love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock by T.S Eliot. They undoubtedly help the reader understand certain themes and ideas that are present throughout the poem. The poem is about a middle-aged man named Prufrock that is very insecure and lives a very dull uneventful life. He is very educated and intelligent but he cannot work up the courage to approach a woman that he is romantically interested in. He constantly imagines what other people would say to him about his many shortcoming and insecurities. Each day he furthers himself more from society, he fails to ever overcome his fears and address the women. The Allusions present in the poem reference works such as Dante’s Inferno, Hamlet, and To his Coy Mistress greatly assist in enhancing the meaning of the poem. The first allusion in the poem is the opening lines which are a reference to the well-known poem Dante’s Inferno. Eliot opens up with the direct quote from Dante’s Inferno, “S’io credesse che mia risposta fosse…” which is the opening to an entire excerpt about a man talking about how he is trapped in the place no one has every returned from known as hell. Near the end of the poem Prufrock says, “No! I am not Prince Hamlet” he does not feel the same way anymore that he did at the beginning of the poem when he thought of himself as similar to Hamlet. He now realizes that he is not as important as the Prince of Denmark and that he is not in any way an important person. In Prufrock’s opinion he would not be Hamlet but rather he would be a trivial and un important figure of the play such as Polonius. Saeed Jones’s debut poetry collection, Prelude to Bruise (2016), is an essential contemporary piece of work comprised of narrative free verse’s that tackle an African-American historical past that is present in our existing society. During the 1960’s African American Studies began to be implemented in American universities due to the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Nationalism (penguin dictionary). While the title of the collection implies the commencement of bruising and its inescapability, the growth of the poems throughout indicate steady progress in our society. Much of the collections focus is on historical contexts of Jones past and beyond, integrating brutality, race, violence and power. An African-American Studies reading of the collection reveals that the brutal past of African-Americans still weighs on modern society.
Allusion Throughout Love Medicine Louise Erdrich used allusions to refer to different events that effected Native American culture and their life on the reservation. Vietnam, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and differrent laws surrounding the relocation of Natives were referenced in this piece. Erdrich used allusions to refer to childrens programs like Road Runner and Tarzan. She used Tarzan beating his chest to to convey the emotional prayer he was giving in the church and Howard Kashpaw’s evening televisions show to lead Lishpaw MOrrissey to some deep thoughts about life. However, the more prominate allusions were those that refered to the government deal to give the Native Americans back their land although their land wasnt the same as the one they got back.
What does any author use allegories for in everyday life? ”Speeches”, stories, “and” even conversation”,”with. So have decided to do some research on the author Theodore Seuss Geisel ( Dr. Seuss) to explain the allegories in his stories because an allegory is when you have a moral in what you are writing or expressing. Allegories are effective to convey ideas in an essay or other expressive ways because they tell you about types of reasoning. Another portion of the text that is worth analyzing is whether or not the poet is a real person or a generalization about all or most poets. All of the lines in the poem use general text and never label a specific person. What’s interesting about the text is that without the title it would be nearly impossible to distinguish whether or not the person the poem is about is a poet or not. The narrator within the poem perceives himself as superior to the subjects that he observes, and recognizes that they behave as savages due to the absence of rules and boundaries. They fail to acknowledge the error in their destructive behavior and continue to act with free will, which portrays human nature as wicked and unruly. One of them glanced at the narrator and insinuated that they were equals, which implies that the narrator also indulges in sinful behavior with the rest of them. Despite the narrator’s feeling of superiority, their actions reflect the same manner as those they view as beneath them. There exists a domino effect that causes the behavior of others to influence the nature of those surrounding them.
In T.S. Eliot’s work “The LoveSong of J. Alfred Prufrock”, he uses diction to give an underlying meaning and tone to his poem in order to express the downfall of a man. The author uses his diction to give this poem Its tone as if he regrets what he did in life. He also shows great tone changes in this work, giving this poem a dramatic, almost tragic outlook. Many of his word choices also give his work an underlying meaning and adds to his theme and messages. A large part of his poem is also using metaphors to add to this underlying meaning and give more force to this tone he is trying to create.
For instance, he writes “And would it have been worth it, after all, / After the cups, the marmalade, the tea, / Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me, / Would it have been worth while, / To have bitten off the matter with a smile, / To have squeezed the universe into a ball / To roll it toward some overwhelming question” (“Prufrock” 87-93). This vivid imagery shows how he compares taking on some overwhelming question to squeezing the universe into a ball; this is virtually impossible, so Prufrock is very intimidated by confronting people in society, specifically women.
