Toulmin Analysis Essay on Campus Carry Across the Country, colleges have been debating on how to deal with the issue of campus carry. Campus carry is the idea that students and faculty should have the constitutional right to conceal carry firearms on their respective campus. Some students believe that their rights and being taken away by not being allowed to conceal carry, while other believe that guns only bring violence to campus. In the article, “Students Should Have the Right to Carry Guns on College Campuses” I will use Toulmin analysis on the article. While the article argues that students should have conceal carry; I believe it is wrong, because students do not have the responsibility, more guns do not create safety on campus, and the presents of guns creates a fearful atmosphere. The article’s claim is that students should have the right to conceal carry on a college campus. This claim is supported by two main sub-claims within the article: gun-free zones are not necessarily safe zones, students should have the right to defend themselves, and campus carry provides safety when in place. An example of this is in 2005 there were 30,694 who died by firearms and only 147 were justifiable acts of self-defense. Other issues include acts such as suicide. When guns are present, the suicide rate is proven to increase. According to IACLEA, suicide accounted for 55% of the total 30,694 firearm deaths in the United States (Dickerson). Supports of Campus carry say that they need guns to defend themselves from armed attackers. During 1900 to 2008, U.S. Secret Service, Department of Education, and the F.B.I. conducted a study. They found 272 cases of targeted violence in instructions of secondary education and during that time only 281 people were killed
