Samuel Adams was a man of many occupations; he was a businessman, colonial activist, member of the Massachusetts legislature, and a protestor, but his occupation most important to the independence of the colonies was as a political leader. An influential politician in colonial Massachusetts, Adams was known to use propaganda to his advantage during the years before the American Revolution. Samuel Adams contributions to the Caucus Club, protests against British taxation, and founding of the Sons of Liberty made him essential to the early struggles for independence in the colonies. When the Stamp Act came into effect in the colonies, it required all colonial newspapers, legal documents, playing cards, etc. to have a stamp purchased from stamp masters throughout the colonies. It was the first direct tax in the colonies, and the colonists were brutally awakened from the period of salutary neglect. Adams was a fierce challenger of the Stamp Act, and he constantly raised opposition to it in Massachusetts. Adams successfully exploited the political and economic unrest in the colonies and raised opposition throughout Massachusetts towards the Stamp Act. Adams used many forms of opposition in the colonies, including creating committees to oppose the attempt of Parliament to establish taxes on the colonies, but his main form of protest was through nonimportation agreements. By creating a list of violators of the nonimportation agreements, Adams encouraged punishments of violators and therefore united the colonies in their effort. Samuel Adams graduated from Harvard in 1743, even though he was a very educated young man he struggled getting a successful business started because he had problems with handling his finances, but most young people face the same struggles. With no where to turn he joined his family business, and began to produce malt for brewing beer. In his spare time Samuel became an active writer with the independent paper, he was writing articles on the politics that were in the public. Politics became one of his interests in while studying law in college. Samuel was critical of local leaders in his articles because of their alignment with the British.
Samuel Adams became governor of Massachusetts on the 8th of October after the death of John Hancock. John Hancock, who was elected governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1780, passed away at age 56 on the 8th of October. He also signed the Declaration of Independence and was president of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1777. Throughout his last years Hancock suffered from gout and poor health. These health conditions had caused Hancock resign as governor once before, but was reelected in 1787.
