There are many students in high school who have started to think about college; if it’s essential for them. Most parents encourage their children to apply. Nowadays education is very valuable to the point that it will help a student get a job in the future. A job that is well paid and provides a good living for that person. Many controversies have been set high whether college is worth it or that it is not for everyone. The author, Chris Matthews writes an article on, “Why College isn’t For Everyone, “ and it discusses the statistics of how a degree does not make any difference in a job payment than one that does not have a degree. Whereas the author, David Leonhardt, explains, “Is College Worth It”. It discusses the fact that as the economy grows, so does the technology developments; it is important for college graduates to pursue careers that will help them in the long run. A college education is essential for the economy and the student itself as it will allow them to pursue a career that will benefit their lives. Having no college degree will affect a person’s career in the future. In the economy today, workers strive to perform their best when it comes to having a raise, so that they can support themselves or their loved ones. People who have no degrees is not always a bad thing compared to those who have degrees; it’s about how people are getting paid, according the Chris Matthews. Some people carry the responsibility of repaying student loans well into their adulthood. The writer suggests these people should consider a different pathway in order to not deal with that responsibility. Even if financial difficulties can possibly be taken care of, college brings on rigorous academic challenges as well. Not every student is equipped with the skills to succeed in college; in fact, Pharinet states that, “there are students who cannot read attending college” (Pharinet 680). Although a rare case, it completely goes against the idea that college is for everyone.
The fact that not everyone needs to go to college is the main point that Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill write about in great detail throughout their essay. Even though the authors do say that people that go to college usually earn more, they state that this is on “average,” and that the key focus of their essay is to focus on those that the benefits are not greater than the cost of going to college. (Page 211, Paragraph 1). They also include a graph right under the text that shows how “on average” people with a college degree earn more than those that are just high school graduates. (Page 211, Figure one).
In his essay, "College isn't for Everyone. Let's Stop Pretending It Is," Michael Petrilli uses the title of his article to clearly state the opinion that college is simply not for everyone. He supports this opinion on the statistically low college graduation rate of lower income students. He links this low rate of graduation to poor performance in high school, which leaves students unready for college upon completion of twelfth grade. On the job technical training is presented as a viable alternative to college, where a skill can be obtained to provide a career.
