Should Everyone Go To College Stephanie Sawhill Analysis

Currently in America, the popularity of attending college is increasing, but so are tuition costs. Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, in their essay, Should Everyone Go to College?, refute the idea that college is a necessity to live a prosperous life. Their purpose is to inspire a change in legislation to make information on the drawbacks of college more accessible to high school students. Owen and Sawhill effectively appeal to their audience of legislators by systematically proving that college is not a necessity At the start of the essay, directly after the thesis, Owen and Sawhill immediately address a popular counter argument. They point out that a common problem with statistics about college versus high school graduates is that “the smartest most motivated people are both more likely to go to college and more likely to be financially successful”

Chris Matthew doesn't believe that college graduates Always make more than highschool graduates. He says that “the bottom quarter of earners with college degree don't make more than an average high school student.”(pg.2). Experts claim that even though the price of a college Education is rising. It pays off in the end. But Matthews disagrees with them.

The authors do a fantastic job of presenting these opinions fairly. The authors always present data or figures supporting college degree benefits. They also never undermine the quality or credibility of the data. However, the authors do a poor job of reacting to the opposing evidence. The authors usually react by stating that “for a given individual, the benefits [of going to college] may not outweigh the costs” (212).

This summary is about Linda Lee’s essay “The Case against College”. Lee has several great points about life and how college isn’t for everybody. Lee feels strongly that not everyone needs to attend college and get a degree. Throughout the essay Lee is knowledgeable on the information and data she is mentioning. She does a great job at answering questions that came to mind when reading the essay.

In the articles, “Is College Worth It” written by David Leonhardt and “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” written by Chris Matthews, both writers build an argument to persuade readers that attending college is for everyone and is a time to emphasize one’s thoughts for the future. In the article, “Is College Worth It”, Leonhardt begins his argument by using statistics. Leonhardt states that, “Americans with four-year college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average in 2013 than people without a degree” (Leonhardt, par. 3). This implies that individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher are more likely to earn more money per hour compared to those who do not have a degree.

Whereas some are convinced that going to college is more beneficial, others maintain on the idea that colleges isn't quite necessary. It discusses the fact that as the economy grows, so does the technology developments; it is important for college graduates to pursue careers that will help them in the long run. A college education is essential for the economy and the student itself as it will allow them to pursue a career that will benefit their lives. Having no college degree will affect a person’s career in the future. In the economy today, workers strive to perform their best when it comes to having a raise, so that they can support themselves or their loved ones.

Throughout Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich writes of the many obstacles that she runs in to while trying to live off of a few minimum wage jobs. It is my opinion, that a person can live better and have more opportunities to grow if they have a college degree. In some cases, people who do go to college still end up working in low paying jobs, but no job is a definite with a college degree or not. When a person goes to college they should consider all the majors their school offers and the potential job prospects of choosing that major. If a person goes to college to become a freelance artist versus someone who goes to school to become an accountant, there is going to be way more job opportunities for those who studied accounting. In addition to college graduates not getting a job of their preference, school can also be costly. People are intimidated to go to college because they are afraid of not being able to pay off student loans.

Although college is stressful and time consuming , having your dream career, is a huge life achievement. Having a job isn’t the same as having a career “I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as 'making a life”(Maya Angelou). If you sell yourself short by not going to college you’ll end up working just to make ends means not because it's what you enjoy doing, it's due to your family counting on it. Those who go to college will end up having a better future than those who don’t.
