Why Did Communism Fail

This party was a party that advocated far Left ideas for government, specifically for the creation of labor unions for the working class. The Communist Party of America formed a small organization consisting of three caucuses and leadership positions. Its members would hold planned conventions from which they drafted a Constitution and a Program for the party. Many members of the Communist Party of America were of Russian descent and held a strong faith in the effectiveness of a communist government. They wanted to increase the communist movement to the point that it would be noticed overseas by the Russian government.

When I was 10 years old I looked up communism, and it meant ‘a society where property was public, and everyone would be helped according to needs.’ This confused me because I had always heard of communism in a negative context. Such a society would mean that, everyone would have food, water, shelter, an education and job. This is the ideal society. So why was it talked about with disgust and horror?

The Gulag's(Glavnoe Upravlenie Lagerei), were a huge grid of labour camps that were dispersed across the Soviet Union. They kept the citizens of Russian in constant fear, if you spoke out against Stalin in any form, you could be sent to the Gulag's. Communism was enforced during Joseph Stalins reign, but this did nothing to speed up the USSR's industrialization. Then because of the communist policies, people started causing issues for the Soviet Government for political and religious reasons. As a result it provided the opportunity to maintain order by keeping the people in fear, this started with the Gulag's.

While communism is meant to help achieve equality for everyone it has been proven we can’t achieve a perfect communist state. Communism first originated from the Greek idea during the Golden Age that harmony and bliss would be achieved without owning private property (Beer, "Origins of Communism"). During Karl Marx’s time he wanted the proletariat, the working class, to overthrow the government due to bourgeoisie, the high class, having more opportunities and unfair advantages.

There was also communism and the more radical version of it, Marxism. Marxism, which was created by Carl Marx and Fredrich Engels when they wrote the communist manifesto in 1848. Marxism was a direct response to the industrial revolution and capitalism. It was a form of government that would give power to the working people and abolish private property. The dystopian society depicted in Ayn Rand's novel “Anthem” is a dark and dour world where the people of the world stand as one, and . Although the world is a dark and ominous place, main character Equality 7-2521 seeks out elation with his rediscovered technology “artificial light”. He seeks this with not pride or dignity in his technology but almost a sense of wanted to break free from the binding chains of the dystopian society, as if he was doing a favor to not only to himself but also to society. However; he also knew what he was doing was very sinful, and it could land him in The Palace of Corrective Detention.

The discontinuation of The New World, a Seattle-based, communist supported paper, suggests that the party was having some issues with finance and lack of members and supporters. So, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that by the mid 1950’s, the Communist Party was a shadow of its former glory. Constantly under attack from the FBI, state agencies, and privately controller anti-communist groups, the Communist Party spent most of its time, money, and effort on legal defense. Though it once had a large web of affiliated organizations, the majority of that was gone, demolished by the threat of being blacklisted by the government. The affiliated organizations had all either disbanded or cut all ties to the Communist Party, leaving the party with largely no support.

Communism was an economic-political philosophy founded by Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels. These men both had similar principle which lead to their book named " The Communist Manifesto ". They both desired to end capitalism feeling that it was the social class system that led to exploitation of workers. This led to many conflicts between capitalism and communism as economic systems. Communism posed a domestic threat to America because communism resulted in Red Scare, Era of McCarthyism, and Cold War.

Communism, like it's right-wing counterpart fascism, is not just a force of political turmoil. It's a force of nature, rooted in the flaws of humanity. A movement built on the ideas of only two men, but passionate enough in it's message that it spread from two to millions. Whether those two men, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, were smart is entirely subjective. Like any cult of personality, they're intellegent in their own right.

Communism in the Cold War "The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want, they spread and grow in the evil soil of the poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died. We must keep that hope alive." as said by Harry S. Truman on march 12, 1947 in The Truman Doctrine.

Communism is the act of seeing everyone equally in the middle class level, which then means the state controlled all means of production. So, when asked the question of how successful it was I would have to say it was not successful even though there was an attempt to contain communism. The dictionary defines communism as a political and economic system in which the major productive resources in a society such as mines, factories, and farms are owned by the public or the state, and wealth is divided among citizens equally or according to individual need. So, if I had to evaluate the containment of communism during the cold war using the definition above as my standard I would have to strongly say they were unsuccessful. Communism is like the ideal society and in no way was the United States perfect.

An advantage to this is that if a leader tries to make corrupt rules the other branches can overthrow them. However, if the whole government is corrupt then, example in the US the citizens who have a right to bear arms can fight back against the tyranny in the government and attack them therefore possibly restarting a new government. In communism or a communist government the government can dictate and rule what the citizens of that country can and cannot do. ”Communism places strict rules as to how businesses operate in such a way that a classless society is born.” (lumenlearning.com).

Communism, an ideology developed by Karl Marx, was a key component in the revolution of USSR. Marx envisioned a society where the lower and upper classes were equal in regards to property and rights. During the Russian Revolution, an extensive amount of propaganda was used to promote communism. Although propaganda was used in various forms, the posters made a huge impact in convincing the population of Soviet Union to support the communist cause. The posters contained several healthy messages about the effects of the revolution in Soviet Union.

The idea of communism arose from The Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The Communist Manifesto was a political pamphlet that gave an approach to class struggle and capitalism. The pamphlet soon after became popular across the world. Over a 100 years later, an African-American civil rights leader by the name of Martin Luther King Jr. would read this pamphlet and use similar idea's to achieve his dream of integration and equality. King, a minister, was known for using somewhat communist views in reference to Marx in many of his speeches and letters.

Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist in the 18th century. He is known for his book the Communist Manifesto that was published in 1848. Marx believed that a revolution of the working classes would over throw the capitalist order and creates a classless society. The Industrial Revolutions led to the proletarianization; his partner Friedrich Engels explained why the changes created by the proletarianization of the worker would develop into a huge problem for industrial societies. I do believe that Karl Marx’s vision of communism in the Communist Manifesto could re-emerge as a popular and workable philosophy of social, economic, and political organization.
